Texas lawman Bo Duggan got the shock of his life when Mattie Collier showed up on his doorstep, claiming his daughter was really hers and not his son's twin. But before Bo could argue, Mattie became a gunman's target and duty compelled him to protect her. After getting the children to safety and then going on the run, Bo couldn't help but admire the way Mattie wouldn't back down—from a fight and from believing she was his baby's mother. Bo had trouble imagining a life without the little girl he'd given his heart to. And before long, he had to admit, he had trouble imagining living without her mother, too.

Lawlessness in Texas did not end with the close of the cowboy era. It just evolved, swapping horses and pistols for cars and semiautomatics. From Patrolman "Newt" Stewart, killed by a group of servicemen in February 1900, to Whitesboro chief of police William Thomas "Will" Miller, run down by a vehicle in the line of duty in 1940, Ron DeLord and Cliff Caldwell present a comprehensive chronicle of the brave--and some not so brave--peace officers who laid down their lives in the service of the State of Texas in the first half of the twentieth century.

In this Western romance, a Texas lawman will do anything to protect the courageous woman he only just met—especially if it means marrying her! Texas, 1901. It was quite an introduction, but before sunrise, Sheriff Brace Caulfield knew Sarah Murphy was a woman to match him in every way. She was so determined to rescue her nephew from abuse that she’d put herself smack in the middle of danger. All that would protect her now was an instant wedding—to Brace! A lucky star must have been shining in the wide Western sky the night Sarah Murphy tracked her no-account brother-in-law to Benning, Texas. There she met lawman Brace Caulfield, an imposing, arousing bear of a man who swore she’d be safe and happy-ever-after if she’d just say the words “I do”!

Dan Ricker didn’t have a badge. He didn’t ask to be a lawman. But he owed his life to Marshall Burke—and when Burke died while taking killer Jack Gorman to jail, Ricker knew he had to take over the job. The trail led through treacherous Comanche territory—where Ricker picked up the added burden of a girl whose father had been murdered by the Indians. Even worse, it had to pass close to the Gorman ranch, where Jack’s vicious, vengeance-hungry kin waited in ambush. The Gormans had everything, including geography, in their favor—and it would take wits as well as raw courage to win through. And even when Ricker and his prisoner reached the apparent safety of town, jail, and civilized law, there was one final enemy to face … and one final showdown.

William L. Wright (1868-1942) was born to be a Texas Ranger, and hard work made him a great one. Wright tried working as a cowboy and farmer, but it did not suit him. Instead, he became a deputy sheriff and then a Ranger in 1899, battling a mob in the Laredo Smallpox Riot, policing both sides in the Reese-Townsend Feud, and winning a gunfight at Cotulla. His need for a better salary led him to leave the Rangers and become a sheriff. He stayed in that office longer than any of his predecessors in Wilson County, keeping the peace during the so-called Bandit Wars, investigating numerous violent crimes, and surviving being stabbed on the gallows by the man he was hanging. When demands for Ranger reform peaked, he was appointed as a captain and served for most of the next twenty years, retiring in 1939 after commanding dozens of Rangers. Wright emerged unscathed from the Canales investigation, enforced Prohibition in South Texas, and policed oil towns in West Texas, as well as tackling many other legal problems. When he retired, he was the only Ranger in service who had worked under seven governors. Wright has also been honored as an inductee into the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame at Waco.
