Excerpt from The Advance of Our West African Empire The idea of writing a work upon the stirring events which took place in Sierra Leone in 1898 was suggested to me by a General Officer who at one time in his career had seen a good deal of service in West Africa. On my return from that country in the following year he remarked that the difficulties and hardships of our "little wars" in that part of the world were not always appreciated by those at home. Commenced in India - continued, as far as official duties would permit, in West Africa; and completed during my leave of absence in England - I now place this volume before the public, in the hope that all shortcomings will be forgiven. It is intended to be a plain statement of facts, and although I am aware that I have been unable to describe all the incidents of the various expeditions, and have given none of the "Protectorate Expedition" in 1899, what I have said is, I believe, correct in detail. If the hints on Bush Fighting and for the Preservation of Health will benefit any one in West Africa, and if the remainder of the work succeeds in arousing any interest in that much abused part of the globe, I shall be fully compensated. My thanks arc due to Sir Norman R. Pringle, Bart., Captain C. C. W. Troughton, G. Whiteley Ward, Esq., and to the Intelligence Division of the War Office for the use of their maps, &c. Excerpt from The German African Empire Once bit, twice shy, is accepted as a rough formula of English diplomatic methods, but in all the preliminaries which prepared the way for the proclamations of Germany's territorial annexations in Africa, the British Foreign and Colonial Offices were four times bitten without betraying a single symptom of their proverbial shyness. In the whole business, the German Imperial Government did more than lay the foundations of her transitory Colonial Empire it embarked upon a national course of duplicity, lying, bad faith, and general roguery which culminated in the violation of Belgium, and thereby built for itself a monument of dishonour which will endure until the end of the world. And the monument of blindness and perversity erected by Mr. Gladstone's administrations in their relations with Bismarck in 1883 and 1884 will not be less enduring. Excerpt from The Ewe-Speaking Peoples of the Slave Coast of West Africa: Their Religion, Manners, Customs, Laws, Languages, &C The people of these four groups have not progressed equally since their separation. Speaking generally, it may be said that, proceeding from west to east, we find a gradual advance in civilization; the Tshi-speaking peoples being the least, and the Yoruba-speaking peeples the most, advanced. How far this may be due to local conditions and surrounding, I do not pretend to say. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
