Excerpt from The American Turf Register and Sporting Magazine, Vol. 14: January, 1843 It may be said by some, on reading this paper, Aye, but if you had had Old Doll out at the Duke's, you would have got on no bet ter. I answer, I saw the young dog do ill the same thing which I had seen her do well a hundred times; and I never saw him attempt that which the Old one wcluld have practised with success twenty times in the day. Again, it will be urged by many, You tell us what we already know, and bring forward acknowledged facts as if you only knew them, and warn us against errors which every man knows and shuns. I am hotso sure of that. I have known even men Of forty esteem a young dog or a new dog better than an old one: and when I was about three-and twenty, I fooled away a fine old pointer which had been given to my poor father for a young setter with a splendid stern, fashionable color, bred by an Earl's keeper, and broke by a crack hand. He was a good dog notwithstanding; but then he knew nothing in com parison with poor Old Hector. Enough! My Object was to tell my tale of experience, to speak a few words in favor of Old friends, and I have done it. One word more I have a Spaniel now, and have had him nine seasons. There is a little Spinney in which I am sure of phea sant whenever I beat that lordship, if it is driven the right way from the river; and I have seen the Old dog, when we got within reach of it, enter it at the right, quarter and beat it as truly and right as if he understood what was wanted: nay more, to test him, I lent him to a friend two or three days, and he did the same thing as regularly as if his own master had been there to make him. Excerpt from American Turf Register and Sporting Magazine, 1839, Vol. 10 We beg to acknowledge our indebtedness to The Sporting Review for the very spirited and beautiful design of the vignette on our Cover. It was engraved by forbes, a young artist of great promise, who also made the drawing. We are indebted to the same artist for the Race Cup on the Opposite page of the Cover and hardly know whether most to admire his taste in drawing, or his skill as an engraver in either department he has no superior of his years. Excerpt from American Turf Register and Sporting Magazine, Vol. 3: September, 1831 August, 1832 At no period, perhaps, since the horse was subjected to our do minion and use, has the pure blooded strain more rapidly risen in value, from the disesteem into which it had fallen, than it has, in this country, within the last two years; we might, without vanity, say since the commencement of the American Turf Register, for the association of the two facts is sufficiently obvious to be regarded, in some mea sure, as cause and effect. Excerpt from American Turf Register and Sporting Magazine, Vol. 2: September, 1830, to August, 1831 The Barbary horse, though in all probability originally descended from an Arabian stock, is neither so handsome nor tall, but stronger, and carries a greater depth of carcass than the Arabian. He has a shorter back, a stronger loin, and a fuller ank; is tractable, docile, and sure-footed; not very spirited, but when urged will discover good speed and vigour, and excellent wind; and when running he runs closer and strides better than the Arabian; and his colour is more usually white.
