In the first century a.d., Ovid, author of the groundbreaking epic poem Metamorphoses, came under severe criticism for The Art of Love, which playfully instructed women in the art of seduction and men in the skills essential for mastering the art of romantic conquest. In this remarkable translation, James Michie breathes new life into the notorious Roman’s mock-didactic elegy. In lyrical, irreverent English, he reveals love’s timeless dilemmas and Ovid’s enduring brilliance as both poet and cultural critic.

Excerpt from The Art of Courtly Love This translation was originally undertaken, some fifteen years ago, for the use of students in a course in medieval literature in transla tion. It is now published in the hope that it may prove useful to others who desire some acquaintance with one of the significant books of the Middle Ages, but who are unable to read the medieval Latin in which it is written. My primary aim has been to preserve the ideas of Andreas, and to keep close to what he says, even though it has been necessary, at times, to use somewhat awkward English in doing so. My secondary aim has been to reproduce something of his style. This is in general colloquial, but it is colored with Biblical expres sions, and at times it becomes almost pompous when he tries to re produce the speech of the upper classes. In one respect, however, it seemed best not to follow him. Andreas is very fond of loose, strag gling sentences strung together with and, but, for, so, or some similar connective. Medieval rhetoric was much more tolerant of such sentences than modern readers are, but Andreas seems to go beyond the practice of his contemporaries. In my translation such sentences have been broken up into shorter, more manageable units. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Love in Art examines the romantic impulse in the visual arts, using examples both famous and obscure to take the reader on a passionate journey. Mary Knight Potter opens her book with an introduction in which she states that while love is likely the inspiration for more artistic works than anything else, sculptures and paintings rarely receive recognition for being works about the passion of men and women. The purpose of the book is thus to examine love in the visual arts and present a brief synopsis to the reader. The book is divided into chapters, each of which examines a different subject matter. Chapters focus on Greek art, Biblical love stories and their artistic representations, mythological love scenes as painted, wives and lovers of artists, and several other topics. Each section contains references to specific works of art, often times accompanied by an illustration demonstrating the work to the reader. Mary Knight Potter's passion for art is apparent from the first page. This is a thoroughly researched and well-articulated treatise on the subject matter. Potter presents works of art, both popular and unfamiliar, that demonstrate the emotional connection made between two people. Art historians will certainly find Potter's take on several well-known pieces to be fascinating, as the author approaches these works from a sometimes unconventional angle. Love in Art is a book that will appeal to any reader whose interest is piqued by art history. Potter's exploration of love makes this a pleasant read and one approachable by the layman. If you are at all interested in the subject matter, this book is a worthwhile addition to your personal library. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
