The World's Most Beautiful Ship Captured by One of the World's Most talented Military Artists John Charles Roach, the son of naval architect, discovered early on that his talents were in art, not engineering. Before joining the U.S. Navy he studied art in Frankfurt, Germany and later at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. In 1976, as a young Lieutenant Junior-Grade, he was commissioned to do a series of sketches of the USS Constitution in preparation for the coming national bicentennial. That work, buried in obscurity for over 30 years, is brought to light once again and made available to a much wider audience. Roach later became one of the best known combat artists of all time. He actively served in Vietnam, Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and the Bosnia-Herzegovina conflict-serving 10 years on active duty and another 13 years as a reservist. His 16' X 50' mural of the USS Arizona in on display at the USS Arizona Visitors Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. "Mr Roach has captured the essence of the USS Constitution with his pen and ink as no other." - J. William Middendorf II, Secretary of the Navy. This work is a training manual for members of the crew of the 1797 United States frigate Constitution, the world's oldest warship in commission. The venerable vessel, which earned its nickname, "Old Ironsides," during the War of 1812, is today permanently berthed in the Charlestown Navy Yard, across the Charles River from its building site in Boston, Massachusetts. The historic frigate is open to visitors year round, with tours provided by the crew, active sailors in the United States Navy. The lessons in the manual are divided among three groups, corresponding to the three skill levels of the tour guides, Basic, Advanced, and Master. In addition to the chronology and major events in the history of USS Constitution, the manual explains the historical contexts in which those events took place. The text is written in an engaging and accessible manner that will make it attractive to anyone interested in USS Constitution or in the early U.S. Navy in general.

The Constitution was one of the US Navy's first six original frigates, ordered as a counter to the Barbary corsairs in the Mediterranean. Fast and heavily built, she was nominally rated as a 44 but mounted thirty 24-pdr and twenty-two 12-pdr cannon. Her most famous encounter, after which she became nicknamed 'Old Ironsides' due to British shot being seen bouncing off her hull, involved HMS Guerriere, which she smashed; the same treatment was meted out to HMS Java four months later. Now the oldest commissioned warship afloat in thw world, she is berthed in Boston Harbor. The 'Anatomy of the Ship' series aims to provide the finest documentation of individual ships and ship types ever published. What makes the series unique is a complete set of superbly executed line drawings, both the conventional type of plan as well as explanatory views, with fully descriptive keys. These are supported by technical details and a record of the ship's service history.

The Story of America's Finest Ship As Told by Three of Her Finest Historians On October 21st 1797, the 44-gun frigate Constitution slid down the ramp at Hartt's shipyard and into the chilly waters of Boston Harbor. While the workmen were proud of their efforts, no one-but NO one-thought she would still be serving her country 210 years later. Yet the Constitution remains afloat, having survived three wars, service on numerous distant stations, duty as a receiving ship, extended periods of neglect and decay, and occasional brushes with the breaker's yard. She has survived all those tribulations to become the oldest commissioned ship still afloat in the world, and a symbol of the heritage and pride our country. Her story is told in a series of 34 short essays by three of the country's leading experts on the USS Constitution's history: Charles E. Brodine, Jr., Michael J. Crawford and Christine F. Hughes of the Naval Historical Center in Washington, DC. Originally published as: Old Ironsides: An Illustrated Guide to USS Constitution, it is brought to a much wider audience in this Fireship Press edition

As we are about to enter upon the study of this book, I want to say first a few things of an introductory character. I suppose there is no portion of Holy Scripture that has meant more to the people of God, particularly to tried and afflicted believers down through both the Jewish and Christian centuries, than the book of Psalms. Of course the worship expressed in this book does not rise to the full character of Christian worship as in this present dispensation of the grace of God. As we read the Psalms we need to remember that when they were written our Lord Jesus had not yet become incarnate; consequently, redemption had not been effected, and so the veil was still unrent. God, as it were, was shut away from man, and man was shut out from God; and so the worshiper of Old Testament times gives expression to certain things that would not be suitable from the lips of an instructed worshiper in this present age of grace. David prays, “Take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.” No well instructed Christian would pray that today, for we know now that we have received the Holy Spirit to abide with us forever. We have been sealed by the Holy Spirit until the redemption of the purchased possession. And then there are a great many of the prayers in the book of Psalms that imply a hidden God. But today God has come out into the light, since our Lord Jesus, by His sacrificial death upon the Cross, has rent the veil and opened up the way into the immediate presence of God for poor sinners and enabled God to come out to man in all the perfection of His glorious Person.

Excerpt from A Cruise on the Constitution: Around the World on Old Ironsides 1844 to 1847 After a pleasant journey of three days, I arrived at the town of Portsmouth (opposite to Norfolk), and took lodgings at the Craw ford House, where Captain Percival had taken rooms. On visiting the navy yard on Thursday, the 16th inst, I found Old Ironsides in the dry dock undergoing the operation of scraping, and having new copper put on where the old had been torn away. From the above date until the middle of April, 1844, the sound of the mallet and chisel was heard without intermission, and during this period of five months over of the public money was ex pended upon this favorite ship.
