Excerpt from The Beginnings of South Indian History The following pages contain the substance of the course of Special Lectures delivered before the University of Madras in January and February of this year. I have also included in this course by way of introduction two other lectures; the first of these was intended to be the inaugural lecture for the University and the second delivered on a previous occasion, both of them bearing directly on the subject of this course. In one or two cases the lecture as delivered was revised to give it the necessary expansion to make it fuller. Otherwise the volume contains no more than the special course of lectures. The sources of matter for these lectures have often been exploited by fits and starts, for various purposes on occasions by different writers. No one, however, made a constructive critical attempt to make these yield the results they were capable of, except the late Mr. Kanakasabhai Pillai of the Madras Postal Service. Excerpt from South Indian Chronological Tables I have now carried the whole through the Press. By the aid of Mr. T. Lakshmiah Naidu, a son-ia law of Mr. Ramanj ulu Naidu, who all along worked with his father-in-law and Mr. Krishnasvami Naidu on their chronological tables, and who has new checked Mr. Krishnasvami Naidu's figures; the calcu. Laticas have been carefully scrutinized, and several mistakes corrected, while additional notes have been addel. My. Earnest hops, thsrefore, is that the present tables may prove fairly free from faults. But, since a set of tables such as these, when finally perfected, will form a standard work of reference for Southern India, it is necessary above all things that there should be no errors of any kind left therein, and therefore it seemed advisable to print at present only a few copies for immediate use, the tables being subject to very careful criticism both in Europe and India before being finally issued. On my representing this in the proper quarter, the Midras Government were pleased to accede to my prepesal and to order the adoption of the course so recommended No. 55, Public, dated 17th January I desire to add that I am not responsible for the accuracy of the initial dates given in columns 7 and 10 of Table C, nor for the intercalated and suppressed months. These are entirely the result of Mr. Krishnasvami N aidu's labours checked by Mr. T. Lakshmiah N aidu. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
