Terrors; it’s not always the monster in the bed that you need to worry about… Dark Shadows: Sean Gilbert’s having his friends for a night of horror movies, but they’re woken in the middle of the night. When they realise it’s not Rusty the cat, they go in search of what it may be, only to find Rusty has beaten them to it. That’s when they discover that shadows aren’t as innocent as they seem. Ne-Fairy-Ous: It’s Alyssa Graham’s tenth birthday and she’s having a party to which all of the local “peasants” are invited. When one guest disappears into the forest behind her house and doesn’t come out, she and her friends follow to continue their bullying of her. But they’re met with a malevolent force they’ve never encountered before. And never will again. A Rake Is Not Just a Garden Tool: Quinn Kingsley and his friends go exploring around the ruins of the local hospital for something to do on a Saturday afternoon. They go armed with bats and cameras because strange sounds have been heard from the ruins. As they walk around making their own “Attenborough” video, they soon find out the hard way that a rake is not just a garden tool. Well, Well, Well…: Wynn Ellery is panning for gold for his twelfth birthday and his friends have come along for the ride. Once they have their fill of gold, burgers, and hotdogs, they trek across the river to explore the old prospecting ruins to see how the world has changed. But what they find is even older, and freakier, than they could ever imagine. Elizabeth Wants to Play: Harlan and his cousin Levi want to show their friends around their grandmother’s house. It’s a home full of weird and wonderful things collected over decades, including all of the haunted toys in the basement who are having one continual tea party. But when one toy, in particular, wants to play with them, the boys have quite a demon on their hands, especially when she gets down and dirty.

This book investigates terrorism and anti-terrorism as related and interacting phenomena, undertaking a simultaneous reading of terrorist and statist ideologists in order to reconstruct the 'deadly dialogue' between them. This work investigates an extensive array of violent phenomena and actors, trying to broaden the scope and ambition of the history of terrorism studies. It combines an extensive reading of state and terrorist discourse from various sources with theorizing of modernity's political, institutional and ideological development, forms of violence, and its guiding images of self and other, order and disorder. Chapters explore groups of actors (terrorists, pirates, partisans, anarchists, Islamists, neo-Nazis, revolutionaries, soldiers, politicians, scholars) as well as a broad empirical source material, and combine them into a narrative of how our ideas and concepts of state, terrorism, order, disorder, territory, violence and others came about and influence the struggle between the modern state and its challengers. The main focus is on how the state and its challengers have conceptualized and legitimated themselves, defended their existence and, most importantly, their violence. In doing so, the book situates terrorism and anti-terrorism within modernity's grander history of state, war, ideology and violence. This book will be of much interest to students of critical terrorism studies, political violence, sociology, philosophy, and Security Studies/IR in genera Mikkel Thorup is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Philosophy and the History of Ideas, University of Aarhus, Denmark.

No country has experienced more acts of terrorism over a prolonged period than Israel. The frequency of attacks has propelled Israel toward innovative methods to address the threat. Indeed, treating so many victims of physical and psychological trauma has given rise to the new field of terror medicine. In a gripping narrative, terrorist expert Leonard A. Cole describes how different segments of Israeli society have coped with terrorism -- survivors of attacks, families of victims, emergency responders, doctors and nurses, and, in the end, the general population. He also interviews Palestinians, including imprisoned handlers of suicide bombers, who endorse or deplore suicide bombings. He concludes that the Israeli experience with preparedness and coping offers valuable lessons for the United States.

An African tightrope walker who can’t die gets embroiled in a secret society’s deadly gladiatorial tournament in this “bloodily spectacular” (Chloe Gong, New York Times bestselling author of These Violent Delights) historical fantasy set in an alternate 1880s London, perfect for fans of The Last Magician and The Gilded Wolves. As an African tightrope dancer in Victorian London, Iris is used to being strange. She is certainly an unusual sight for leering British audiences always eager for the spectacle of colonial curiosity. But Iris also has a secret that even “strange” doesn’t capture… She cannot die. Haunted by her unnatural power and with no memories of her past, Iris is obsessed with discovering who she is. But that mission gets more complicated when she meets the dark and alluring Adam Temple, a member of a mysterious order called the Enlightenment Committee. Adam seems to know much more about her than he lets on, and he shares with her a terrifying revelation: the world is ending, and the Committee will decide who lives…and who doesn’t. To help them choose a leader for the upcoming apocalypse, the Committee is holding the Tournament of Freaks, a macabre competition made up of vicious fighters with fantastical abilities. Adam wants Iris to be his champion, and in return he promises her the one thing she wants most: the truth about who she really is. If Iris wants to learn about her shadowy past, she has no choice but to fight. But the further she gets in the grisly tournament, the more she begins to remember—and the more she wonders if the truth is something best left forgotten.
