Excerpt from The Unity of the Book of Genesis It professes to trace the growth of this legislation from simple and primitive forms to those which are more complex and which imply a later and more developed civilization. And it confidently affirms that these laws could not have been committed to writing in their present form for many centuries after the age of Moses. These hypotheses are discussed in a general way in my "Higher Criticism of the Pentateuch," where the fallacy and inconclusiveness of the reasoning by which they are defended and the falsity of the conclusions deduced from them are exposed. In order to a complete refutation of these hypotheses it is necessary to show still further by a detailed examination their inapplicability to, and incompatibility with, the phenomena of the Pentateuch, and that, so far from solving the question of its origin, they are destitute of any real basis; they find no support in the Pentateuch itself, but are simply the creations of learned ingenuity and a lively imagination. The present treatise occupies itself exclusively with the document hypothesis, and aims to prove that the book of Genesis is not a compilation from different documents, but is the continuous work of a single writer. The demonstration that this hypothesis has no foothold in Genesis effectually overturns it for the rest of the Pentateuch, or, if the critics please, the Hexateuch. It took its rise in Genesis; the most plausible arguments in its favor are drawn from that book; and the verdict rendered by that book substantially settles the case for those that follow. It is on the basis of the assumption that it is firmly established in Genesis that it is carried through the Hexateuch. If that assumption is proved to be false, the hypothesis collapses entirely. What is here proposed is a critical study of Genesis from beginning to end, chapter by chapter and section by section. Excerpt from Notes on the Book of Genesis Christ, "delivered for our offences, and raised again for our justification," settles everything. The moment we believe the gospel, we are saved, and ought to be divinely happy. "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life." (Rom. iv., v.; John iii.) We see the greatness of God's love to the sinner, in His judgment of sin, in the Person of His own dear Son, on the cross. There, God, in perfect grace to us, dealt with sin according to His infinite holiness and justice. He went down to the depths of our ruin, and all our sin, measured it, judged it, and put it forever away - root and branch - by shedding the precious blood of the spotless victim. "He condemned sin in the flesh"; that is, He there condemned the evil root of sin which is in our flesh - our carnal nature. But He also "made an end of sins" - of the actual sins of every believer. Thus, between God and Christ alone, the entire question of sin was gone into, and finally settled on the cross. "Simon Peter said unto Him, 'Lord, whither goest Thou?' Jesus answered Him, 'Whither I go, thou canst not follow Me now.'" Just as Abraham and Isaac were alone on the top of the mountain in the land of Moriah, so were God and Christ alone, amidst the solemnities and solitudes of Calvary. The only part we had in the cross was, that our sins were there. Jesus alone bore the full weight of their judgment. (Comp. Dan. ix. 24; Rom. viii. 3; 2 Cor. v. 21; Heb. ix. 26, 28.) Whenever this blessed truth is learnt from God's own Word, and maintained in the soul by faith, through the power of the Holy Ghost, all is peace, joy and victory. Excerpt from Notes on Genesis The incomplete and fragmentary character of the following notes has delayed their appearance in their present shape, and has caused me to hesitate long as to the expediency of publishing them. But the recep tion already accorded to my father's writings has been such as to confirm my own conviction that any authentic record of his thoughts possesses an intrinsic interest and value transcending the mere form in which they are clothed; and I believe that the Notes on Genesis will not be found deficient in those qualities which mark the works already published.
