Excerpt from The Book of Judges: In the Revised Version With Introduction and Notes The present General Editor for the Old Testament in the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges desires to say that, in accordance with the policy of his predecessor the Bishop of Worcester, he does not hold himself responsible for the particular interpreta tions adopted or for the opinions expressed by the editors of the several Books, nor has he endeavoured to bring them into agreement with one another. It is inevitable that there should be differences of Opinion in regard to many questions of criticism and interpretation, and it seems best that these differences should find free expression in different volumes. He has endeavoured to secure, as far as possible, that the general scope and character of the series should be Observed, and that views which have a reasonable claim to consideration should not be ignored, but he has felt it best that the final responsibility should, in general, rest with the individual contributors. Excerpt from The Book of Judges: With Introduction and Notes I have also to express my grateful thanks to Professor L. W. King for much advice upon matters connected with Babylonian studies. He has read, in particular, 6 of my Introduction and all my Additional Notes which deal with the influence of Babylonian civilization Upon Cana'an; and my confidence in the lines which I have taken in dealing with this side of my subject has been greatly strengthened by his approval and support. Professor R.. W. Rogers of Drew Theological Seminary, Madison, New Jersey, whose regular visits for research. In the Bodleian Library have made him as much a son of Oxford as of the United States, was in residence here during the greater part of the years 1913-14. During our long friendship we have grown accustomed to discuss the Biblical questions in which our common interests lie; and I owe much to his judicial mind and expert know ledge of Assyriology. With my wife I have talked over many of the points, both small and great, which have arisen in the course of my researches; and the book owes not a little to her quick apprehension, sound common sense, and unerring feeling for style and lucidity. Finally, I must thank the Trustees of the British Museum for permission to reproduce the seal-cylinder impressions figured in Plate III., and the two reliefs from the Report on excavations at Carchemish, edited by Dr. D. G. Hogarth, which appear in Plate V. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Judges: Edited, With an Introduction and Notes This third volume of Bible history is devoted to the Great Transition in the history of the People of Israel. Hitherto this people of the invisible Jehovah have stood out from the other nations of the world as a nation with an invisible king. Henceforward they will be found assimilated in the form of their government to other peoples: in theory God is still their ruler, but the visible representatives of Jehovah are no longer men raised up by a spiritual call, but 'kings' succeeding by natural descent. The intervening period then presents the Chosen Nation in its efforts towards Secular Government. I have called this volume 'The Judges' in the title of this office we have the history in embryo. It is the most general of biblical terms for a ruler, and may be applied to government of different types. As the judges are raised up from time to time by the Divine authority, the name reflects the office of the prophets.
