The Boy Behind The Door is a story about my life and my father's life, and how the two have intertwined and influenced one another. My father is a Navajo Native American, who was adopted by a white family, and was not told he was Native American or adopted until he was 18 years old. He had an identity crisis when this happened, and his life became a whirlwind. This fact affected every life decision he made after he found out, thus, affecting my life too. This story really began almost four years ago when I started researching why my family does not have tribal IDs, and I uncovered more than that, and began uncovering an entire family tree.

In August 1982, 12-year-old David, dressed in an anorak and a woolly coat, was found in a public garden in Paris. Taken to the police station, he told a story that at first no one could believe. He had just spent eight years of his life imprisoned by his mother, first chained to a pipe in the bathroom, then locked for the last year in a wardrobe, fed only on scraps. His mother had subjected him to a regime of the most horrific punishments. He was constantly beaten or burned with cigarettes for speaking out of turn, eating too slowly or playing quietly. At his mother's trial David said nothing, still trying to understand her reasons, still desperately hoping for her love. Now 22, with the support of his counsellor, Evangeline de Schonen, David tells his heart-rending story honestly and without bitterness. It is an extraordinary account - utterly compelling, yet at times almost impossible to bear - a portrayal of both the extremes of human cruelty and the capacity of the human spirit to forgive and survive.

"Hugh Martin: The Boy Next Door" is an enchanting jaunt through the Golden Era of Broadway and the MGM musicals. This firsthand account captures the energy and excitement of those special times, with eyewitness tales of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, and dozens more. Hugh recounts the origins of some of America's most beloved songs, including the perennial favorite, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Martin also reveals some secrets that only he could know: the truth about his composition partner Ralph Blane, his addiction to the infamous Dr. Feelgood, Max Jacobson; how he was instrumental in turning Gene Kelly from a performer to a choreographer during the staging of Best Foot Forward; and what it was really like to be part of the MGM musical production machine. As Hugh enters his 96th year, this could be America's last chance to hear these stories from a living source. They are full of his signature charm, grace, musicality, and poeticism.
