The Chemistry and Technology of Edible Oils and Fats contains the proceedings of a conference arranged by Unilever Limited and held at Port Sunlight in England on March 10-12, 1959. The papers explore the chemistry and technology of edible oils and fats, with emphasis on analytical procedures, the methods of industrial processing, and the pattern of dietary fat consumption seen from the viewpoint of the economist. This book is comprised of seven chapters and opens with a discussion on the physical and chemical properties of the constituents of edible oils and fats, with particular reference to the fatty acids, the glycerides, and those closely related compounds which are fatty in a general sense. The following chapters focus on the pattern of fatty food consumption in the United Kingdom; the methods used for the analysis of oils and fats; processing of oils and fats for edible purposes; the use of the isotopic dilution technique in the determination of linoleic acid; and the application of gas/liquid chromatography to the analysis of atheromatous plaques. The final chapter deals with the use of spectroscopic and X-ray techniques in the analysis of oils and fats. This monograph will be a useful resource for chemists and food technologists.

During fiscal year 1969, the Bureau of Mines was engaged in 66 projects to improve methods for producing and utilizing petroleum. Programs directed toward the continued conservation of this natural resource, including crude oil, natural gas, and oil shale, were carried out through research performed at four laboratories supervised and supported by administrative personnel of this Bureau of the Interior. Over 100 technical paper and reports were published by the Bureau or others based on this research, and numerous other reports were prepared for U.S. Government agencies, State agencies, and organizations of the petroleum and natural gas industry engaged in cooperative research programs with the Bureau.

Crude Oil Chemistry is foremost a scientifically exact guide to the full family of classical and modern analytical and process technologies in petroleum refining. In widening its vision also to incorporate a geological history of petroleum formation, present-day geopolitical and economic issues, and approaches to redress and improve the delicate ties between the petroleum industry and the environment, this reference succeeds as a total representation of the factors going into the chemistry of crude oil and their outward bound ramifications. The book thoroughly evaluates the chemistry and processing of low API gravity high-sulfur heavy crude oil increasingly relied on in the industry.

Excerpt from Report of the Chief of the Bureau of Chemistry Ans Oils, 1938 Practically all the soil survey work as well as much of the research work was done in cooperation with State agricultural experiment stations, educational institutions, or other State or local agencies. During the year the Bureau participated in the Department of Agriculture's general program of basic research in agriculture under the bankhead-j ones Act of June 29, 1935, by carrying on research on enzyme action at low temperatures; plant mineral constituents derived from soils and their relation to nutrition and health; allergens of agricultural products; preserving plant specimens in natural condition; hemicelluloses and lignocelluloses of straws and forage crops; and, industrial utilization of the soybean and soybean products. In addition, the Bureau collaborated with the Bureau of Plant Industry on a Bankhead Jones project by making pathological and chemical studies on plant viruses, and in investigating the chemical eradication of weeds, and with the State Department by studying the extent of damage to agricultural land in north eastern Washington by smelter fumes originating ih Canada.
