Bram Stoker is best known for his 1897 publication, Dracula. This work – an epistolary novel weaving hypnotism, magic, the supernatural, and other elements of Gothic fiction – went on to sell over one million copies, and has never been out of print. 'The Chain of Destiny', originally published in 1875 as a serial in Irish magazine The Shamrock, is one of his best short works. Many of the horror stories of monsters and ghouls, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

When the plump merchant stepped into the old crone's wagon, all he could think of was his profit the next year. But little did he know a question waited by all fortune tellers in Areath would be uttered through him. And how could he foresee the task to convey the words of the prophecy to the chosen ones? When apprentice knights Argan and Dal were given a task to escort the Duke's beautiful daughter, all they could think of was getting her safe from the clutches of the usurper King. But little did they know Lady Millicent must reach Franconnia in time for her political wedding. And how could they foresee the meeting with a Vajel, the spirit trapped within a stone? When a kingdom was obliterated half a century earlier, all everyone could think of was the rise of the Elementalists. But little did they know a Dark God had started the plan to rule all Areath. And how could they foresee their continent must survive treason, war and chaos? When an old Paladin started his quest, all he could think of was to revive the Guardians of old. But little did he know the Chains of Destiny - Alean's most precious possession - would bind them and lead them on the path it chose. And how could he foresee it was the only way to bring back hope to the heart of the people?

This early work by E. T. A. Hoffmann was originally published in 1819. Born in Königsberg, East Prussia in 1776, Hoffmann's family were all jurists, and during his youth he was initially encouraged to pursue a career in law. However, in his late teens Hoffman became increasingly interested in literature and philosophy, and spent much of his time reading German classicists and attending lectures by, amongst others, Immanuel Kant. Hoffman went on to produce a great range of both literary and musical works. Probably Hoffman's most well-known story, produced in 1816, is 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King', due to the fact that – some seventy-six years later - it inspired Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker. In the same vein, his story 'The Sandman' provided both the inspiration for Léo Delibes's ballet Coppélia, and the basis for a highly influential essay by Sigmund Freud, called 'The Uncanny'. (Indeed, Freud referred to Hoffman as the "unrivalled master of the uncanny in literature.") Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.
