The Partition of India resulted in a massive exodus of men, women and children from both East and West Pakistan to India in 1947.Even after the emergence of East Pakistan as Bangladesh, an independent democratic nation in 1971, the flow of migrants to the eastern states of India, namely West Bengal, Orissa, Assam and Tripura was not stemmed. The women among them, not only came along with their families, but also singly. Very often forced to accept the burden of a new refugee life, they began their struggle for survival and existence, fraught more often than not, with difficulty and adverse circumstances .The challenge sometimes became so acute, that there was a metamorphic change in their behaviour, thinking and attitude. The status of the women migrants under such circumstances is uncertain and precarious. This book, the outcome of the doctoral thesis at Jadavpur University, Kolkata is an attempt to present a picture of the status of women migrants from Bangladesh who have settled in the two states of West Bengal and Orissa after 1971, specifically, between 1971-2001.The position these women in the wider fabric of India society and their status at home and workplace have been studied, based on a primary survey in selected areas of West Bengal and Orissa, namely Nadia and Murshidabad in West Bengal and Kendrapara in Orissa where there are large settlements of migrants from Bangladesh. It is sincerely hoped that this book will be useful to scholars and researchers in the fields of economics, demography and women studies.

Covering nearly 225 years, this volume tries to capture a broad spectrum of the situation of women performers from Gerasim Lebedeff's time (1795), who are considered to be the first performers in modern Bengali theatre, to today's time. The moot question is whether the role of women as performers evolved down the centuries. Whether this question will lead us to their subjugation to their male counterparts, producers, and directors has been explored here to give readers an understanding of when, where, by whom the politics began, and, by tracing the footprints, we have tried to understand if the politics has changed, or remains unchanged, or metamorphosed with regard to the woman's question in the performance discourse. We have explored, in this regard, how her body, mind, and sexuality interacted with and negotiated the phallocentric hierarchy. The Indian bureaucracy provides the framework that ensures the successful running of a democratic country, continuing the heritage of the Indian Civil Service during British colonial rule. However, patriarchy has continued to serve as the norm in these institutions, with the sexual harassment of bureaucrats representing a particular challenge. Sexual harassment in the workplace is a hard reality, but systematic studies of this phenomenon are few and far between. In this regard, bureaucracy is an area which needs particular academic analysis. This book addresses this research gap and studies the relevance of socio-economic factors leading to sexual harassment in the Indian bureaucracy in Kolkata, Delhi and Bengaluru. It also explores the levels and forms of this harassment, the gender and position of the harasser, and the level of filing complaints by the victims. Moreover, the reasons behind the silence of the victims regarding filing complaints are also analysed. In Changing the Subject Srila Roy maps the rapidly transforming terrain of gender and sexual politics in India under the conditions of global neoliberalism. The consequences of India’s liberalization were paradoxical: the influx of global funds for social development and NGOs signaled the co-optation and depoliticization of struggles for women’s rights, even as they amplified the visibility and vitalization of queer activism. Roy reveals the specificity of activist and NGO work around issues of gender and sexuality through a decade-long ethnography of two West Bengal organizations, one working on lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues and the other on rural women’s empowerment. Tracing changes in feminist governmentality that were entangled in transnational neoliberalism, Roy shows how historical and highly local feminist currents shaped contemporary queer and nonqueer neoliberal feminisms. The interplay between historic techniques of activist governance and queer feminist governmentality’s focus on changing the self offers a new way of knowing feminism—both as always already co-opted and as a transformative force in the world.
