Excerpt from Vermont School Journal, Vol. 4: January, 1862 The inquiry may be raised whether the arts which science has already invented would continue without the further cultivation and maintenance of the same science, We answer, No. Where science dies out, the arts which have sprang from it are soon forgotten. The pyramid and temples of Egypt have survived both the knowledge and the art which erected them. The petrified nations of the East, as China, for instance, where science was cnlo tivated ages ago, but by degrees declined and disappear ed, have made no progress for generations past, except the little which has manifestly resulted from the light re cently forced upon them by the aggressive march of the modern civilization, and appear to be as ignorant of even the monuments of their earlier art as their own mummies. For ages all progress has been at a stand-still; and it would require but little aid from the imagination to regard them as human fossils. And there is nothing at all incred' ible in the thought that this should be se. Forthe stream cannot continue full, after the fountain has become dry Science is the fountain of art; experience and skill are its channels. Keep the fountains full, and the channels will not be wanting. Dry up the fountains, and what was once a flowing river, with its banks crowned with bloom and verdure, becomes an empty ditch or a stagnant pool. Excerpt from The Pennsylvania School Journal, 1899, Vol. 48 Stevens. Our first end was special, that Pennsylvania might know and duly honor these men for their unselfish devotion to the cause of general education. The second, that their portraits might go upon the walls of school rooms everywhere to aid in encouraging the placing of more pictures, and good ones, in the schools of the State. The importance of ornamenting the walls of the school-room - the benefit that may result from it, and therefore the necessity and the duty involved is felt, as it should be, by few teachers and school officers. This item of the school equipment is no less essential in the ideal school than text-books or furniture. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
