Why do Europeans and Americans see the world so differently? Why do Europeans and Americans have such different understandings of democracy and its discontents in the twenty-first century? Contrasting the civilization that produced the starkly modernist "cube" of the Great Arch of La Defense in Paris with the civilization that produced the "cathedral" of Notre-Dame, George Weigel argues that Europe's embrace of a narrow secularism has led to a crisis of morale that is eroding Europe's soul and threatening its future -- with dire lessons for the rest of the democratic world. Weigel traces the origins of "Europe's problem" to the atheistic humanism of the nineteenth-century European intellectual life, which set in motion a historical process that produced two world wars, three totalitarian systems, the Gulag, Auschwitz, the Cold War -- and, most ominously, the Continent's de-population, which is worse today than during the Black Death. And yet, many Europeans still insist -- most recently, during the debate over a new EU constitution -- that only a public square shorn of religiously-informed moral argument is safe for human rights and democracy. Precisely the opposite, Weigel suggests, is true: the people of the "cathedral" can give a compelling account of their commitment to everyone's freedom; the people of the "cube" cannot. Can there be any true "politics" -- any true deliberation about the common good, and any robust defense of freedom -- without God? George Weigel makes a powerful case that the answer is "No," because, in the final analysis, societies are only as great as their spiritual aspirations.

"Throughout the ages, there have been men and women in every race and religion that have mastered time and space, transcended the cycles of karma and rebirth, and returned to the Source of all life. By attaining the goal of life, the ascension, these souls have become ascended masters. In this book, drawn from the author’s pivotal spiritual conference held at Mount Shasta in 1975, you will discover how the saints and sages of both East and West work together behind the scenes of life with seekers in every field of human endeavor. Learn about this vast brotherhood of light, known as the Great White Brotherhood (the word “white” refers not to race but to the aura of white light that surrounds these ascended masters), their devotion to humanity, and their tireless efforts to help you and those you love. Contains an easy-to-understand and unique approach to spiritual astrology called the “Cosmic Clock,” with diagrams. Also explores key interpretations of the Book of Revelation, America’s unique role, and the little-known vision of George Washington and the prophecy of Sir William Hope about the future of America. "

An alternative future history. What might have been? If Nikita hadn't blinked. If children were allowed to "be all that they could be". If adults didn't waste their time and attention on memes and paradigms that are insanity. If I'd known. Shoulda, coulda, and woulda! The human race's millstone -- obsolete thinking. Here's what I think might have been possible.

One of the world’s foremost religion journalists offers an unexpected and provocative look at where the Catholic Church is headed—and what the changes will mean for all of us. What will the Catholic Church be like in 100 years? Will there be a woman pope? Will dioceses throughout the United States and the rest of the world go bankrupt from years of scandal? In THE FUTURE CHURCH, John L. Allen puts forth the ten trends he believes will transform the Church into the twenty-second century. From the influence of Catholics in Africa, Asia, and Latin America on doctrine and practices to the impact of multinational organizations on local and ethical standards, Allen delves into the impact of globalization on the Roman Catholic Church and argues that it must rethink fundamental issues, policies, and ways of doing business. Allen shows that over the next century, the Church will have to respond to changes within the institution itself and in the world as a whole whether it is contending with biotechnical advances—including cloning and genetic enhancement—the aging Catholic population, or expanding the roles of the laity. Like Thomas Friedman’s The World Is Flat, THE FUTURE CHURCH establishes a new framework for meeting the challenges of a changing world.
