This thesis investigated the impact of single motherhood on adolescent behavior in secondary schools in Makadara Constituency, Nairobi County, Kenya. The field research findings revealed that an adolescent living in a single-mother home took on more responsibilities around the home hence leaving little time for personal, peer or school assignments and study. The results further revealed that when an adolescent assumed too much adult-role in the family they ended up performing poorly in school, dropping out of school, having minimal or no time of play, lacking time to socialize and forfeiting time to just be a child and adolescent. The absence of a father figure, less economic security, less attention, less guidance, poor neighborhoods and lack of extended family support system may lead an adolescent to display a high degree of misbehavior, low self-esteem, being reserved and withdrawn in the face of changing demands at home, school and society. The findings further revealed that the unmet needs of the adolescent exposed them to greater risks as they grew up. The field findings revealed that when an adolescent lacks material support, personal fulfillment and spiritual emptiness, it impacts negatively on them. Consequently, if the challenges are not addressed in time, it permeates the whole personality, behaviour and perception of the adolescent, turning them to perpetrators of aggression and misbehavior. The conclusions drawn from the findings indicate that single motherhood affects adolescents in secondary schools in Makadara Constituency, resulting in poor performance, truancy, lying, stealing, immorality, early pregnancy, school drop-out and other irresponsible behaviour that led to indiscipline at home, community and in secondary schools. The recommendation of the thesis is that adolescents from single mothers need to be taught life skills and values that will enable them to handle life challenges effectively.
