DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Electrical World and Engineer, Vol. 38: The Consolidation of "the Electrical World" And "Electrical Engineer"; July 6, 1901 Several moves of great importance to the independent telephone movement were made last week by Cleveland people, thus greatly strengthening the position which the Forest City has long held as the center of the independent interests of America. Not the least of these changes was the announcement made by Judge Thomas, president of the Independent Association of the United States and general man ager of the United States Telephone Company, that he had decided to accept the offer of the presidency of the Telephone, Telegraph Cable Company of America, which is building independent exchanges in New York and Boston, with numerous through toll lines in New York and New England. It is said that when the Eastern position was offered him he demanded the assurance that the oppo sitiou would be fought from beginning to end, and that under no consideration should there be a sale to or a consolidation with the Bell interests. The directors of the New York company were some what slow in making answer to Judge Thomas' ultimatum, evidently fearing possible contingencies, but they finally agreed to the terms and last Friday Judge Thomas announced that he would accept the position. _during the present week he will spend two days in Kan sas City looking after the interests of the new independent company there, and about the middle of the month will take up his duties in New York. It is probable that Judge Thomas will be succeeded by Mr. Maxime Reber, at present consulting engineer for the properties of the Federal Telephone Company.
