The author's previous book was reviewed by Forbes as "1 of 6 books that all entrepreneurs need to read right now." The Ultimate Practical Business Manual will teach you everything you need to know about business....from starting a company to taking it public. Most business books are significantly outdated. This book leverages many online resources and makes the general business, accounting and finance process very easy to understand (and enjoyable too)! There are many incredibly engaging and entertaining video links in the book to YouTube and other sources; 'edutainment' works! Although this book is close to 400 pages, I tried to visualize the content of this book as much as possible as this is a more impactful and enjoyable way to learn (think Pinterest versus the tiny words in the Economist)! The contents of this book are all based on my work experience at several firms, including Goldman Sachs, the consulting industry at Accenture, a few companies I have started, the hedge fund industry where I worked at Citadel and most recently, based on my experience at a prominent San Francisco based venture capital firm. I also included many helpful practical business concepts I learned while I did an MBA at Columbia University and a Bachelor of Commerce degree at McGill University. Think of this book as a "greatest hits" business summary from my MBA, undergraduate business degree, work experience in consulting, equities, hedge funds, venture capital and starting my own companies. As the title of this book suggests, this is a practical manual to help you accomplish your business career goals. I have minimized "boring theoretical concepts" in this book in order to keep it as close to reality as possible. I hope you enjoy it! In addition to teaching at 4 universities in the San Francisco Bay Area, you can find other courses that I teach online at www.udemy.com/user/chris-haroun/. About the Author: Chris Haroun is an award winning business school professor, venture capitalist and the author of "101 Crucial Lessons They Don't Teach You In Business School ." Forbes recently called this book 1 of 6 books that all entrepreneurs must read right now. Chris Haroun has had the opportunity in his career to invest in and meet with the top CEOs, entrepreneurs and investors in the world, including Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Marc Benioff and the CEOs of most large technology companies. Chris is currently a venture capitalist at a prominent San Francisco Bay Area venture capital firm and has previous work experience at Goldman Sachs, hedge fund giant Citadel, consulting firm Accenture and several firms that he has founded. He has successfully raised and has also managed over $1bn in his business/finance career. He has an MBA in Finance from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Commerce Degree with a major in Management Information Systems and International Business from McGill University where he was awarded a McGill University Dobson Fellowship for student venture capital and business model mentoring. Chris is also a frequent guest lecturer at several Bay Area business schools including Berkeley and Stanford. He has written numerous articles and has been interviewed in Forbes, VentureBeat, Entrepreneur Magazine, Wired Magazine, AlleyWatch and Pulse. He has also been interviewed on various business and venture capital topics on several radio stations, podcasts etc., including Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) which is Hong Kong's oldest and sole public service broadcaster. He serves on the boards of several Bay Area technology companies and charities and he lives in Hillsborough, California. Chris Haroun's goal is to "make business education impactful and entertaining with no boring theory; edutainment works!"

Second edition, December, 2014.In its first year, about half of all businesses fail. Five years down the line, depending upon which study you look at, only 1 in 10 to 1 in 3 businesses are left standing. The main reasons businesses fail are no business plan and poor management. That is why this book covers both topics. However, this book goes beyond other books on these topics. The book not only provides a road map for writing a business plan, but also provides a strategy for writing a business plan. A business plan is both a strategic document and a sales document. It also provides the reader with a look into the skills, knowledge and personality of the business owner. Therefore, a good business plan is written to satisfy all of these uses. In addition, this book provides information on how to research and organize the information needed for a business plan, and has worksheets the entrepreneur can use to help make the process easier. Likewise, management topics such as strategic planning (SWOT analysis plus), advertising, branding, project management, customer service management, cash flow management, sales skills, business writing and more are explained, and a method is provided for each management skill that can be implemented and used in the business. There are worksheets for many of the management topics as well. While many business book writers know and cover business writing, it's amazing how few actually apply that knowledge to their business books. I do. The information in this book is presented in bullet points, assuring the reader that he or she does not have to wade through four paragraphs of writing to get a couple of key points. Even the size of the book is practical for the end user. An over-sized book might attract attention in the book store, but would make it difficult to copy and use the worksheets in the book. An under-sized book might demonstrate value by the sheer volume of pages (same amount of information, but more pages), but would mean compressing the worksheets into smaller sizes rendering them less useful. In addition to entrepreneurs, this book was written so that venues teaching entrepreneurship can use it as a text book. In fact, I have been teaching entrepreneurship courses since 1997. This book was written to be a stand alone book, to support my business plan mentoring service (I review the worksheets for clients), and to be a text book for my course, How to Start, Grow and Manage a Business. The book received a very good review from the Midwest Book Review:"Too many businesses are started without the experience needed to keep it alive and going. "Building a Successful Business" is Jay Goldberg's advice manual for those embarking on the entrepreneurial path, with tips on how to avoid the common pitfalls that strike many first time business owners. With advice on strategically planning your business, cautious advertising, business writing, managing the funds and more, "Building a Successful Business" is a strongly recommended pick for any first time business person."Author's personal note: While the review concentrated on new business owners, the book was written for both first time business owners and established business owners. Many people assume that established business owners are utilizing management tools to help ensure success. However, many do not and that is one reason for the high failure rate of existing businesses. My book provides management tools, with associated worksheets, that existing businesses can use to help them achieve or maintain success as well as tools and worksheets for new business owners.

Entrepreneurship involves the creation process-creating something new of value. The creation has to have value to the entrepreneur and value to the audience for which it is developed. This audience can be (1) the market of organizational buyers for business innovation, (2) the hospital's administration for a new admitting procedure and software, (3) prospective students for a new course or even college of entrepreneurship, or (4) the constituency for a new service provided by a non-profit agency. Second, entrepreneurship requires the devotion of the necessary time and effort. Only those going through the entrepreneurial process appreciate the significant amount of time and effort it takes to create something new and make it operational.
