Excerpt from Infant-Baptism: Historically Considered There have been, among others, two marked ten dencies in the history of Christianity which have been productive of evil. One has been the tendency to over estimate the ceremonial elements, and the other to underestimate them. Because of their strenuous ad herence to immersion as the form prescribed in the New Testament for the ordinance of baptism, Baptists have often been misunderstood as champions of the cere monial a-s contrasted with the spiritual elements of the gospel. Nothing could be farther from the truth than this estimate of Baptists. They have indeed expended much effort in maintaining the two ordinances of the New Testament church. But their aim has been always to preserve the spirituality of the gospel, not to lose sight of it in the advocacy of forms and ceremonies. The amount of time and thought expended upon the latter has been no greater than the tendency to over estimate them or pervert their meaning on the part of others. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for Of such is the kingdom of God. Excerpt from Infant Baptism: Its Nature and Objects The commonly received doctrine of the Reformed Churches, as to the nature and object of baptism, is concisely and comprehensively stated in our Shorter Catechism Baptism is a sacrament wherein the washing with water in the name of the Father, and Of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, doth signify and seal our ingrafting into Christ, and partaking of the benefits of the covenant of grace, and our engage ment to be the Lord's. This definition, put into the mouth of a believer, is evidently intended to include infant baptism; and we will best attain the end of our present investigation, by examining the place which is here assigned to it, by inquiring to what extent, or in what sense, the representation here given of this ordinance as a Sign and seal harmonises with the view which Scripture warrants us to take of baptism as administered to infants. Excerpt from Infant Baptism Church and by Christian parents. The best possible results of Christian training are rarely realized, for the reason that the training itself is imperfect. A thor ough course of training, where there is a due blending Of authority, affection and Christian teaching on the part of parents, and the proper care and influence on the part _of pastors, with prayer and faith, would breed up a style of Christian now rarely seen among us. This training, to answer to the divine ideal, must be based on baptism and the covenant therein entered into by the parent for the child.
