Excerpt from The Fathers of Greek Philosophy The substance of the following work has been already presented to the public in several Articles by the Author, which have appeared successively under the titles of Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates, in a recent edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. As these Articles all related to one definite period in the History of Ancient Philosophy, and are intimately connected with one another; it was suggested to the Author, that they might advantageously be combined as a whole in a separate Volume. For this purpose, accordingly, a revision of them has been undertaken, and considerable additions have been made under each head of the Inquiry; so as to convey, it is hoped, a more accurate and full information concerning the state of Philosophy during the period in question. Excerpt from Early Greek Philosophy References to authorities, except of the most general kind, are precluded by the plan of the Series to which this Primer belongs. It is, there fore, as well for me to mention that I have gone to the original sources for my materials. The admirable work of Hermann Diels, Fragmente oler Vorsokratiker, Bd. I., Berlin, 1906, has been most helpful for the prae-sophistic philosophers. As regards the interpretation of early Greek philosophy I have found no reason to depart from the views given in my Philosophy of Greece At the same time I wish it to be under stood that, ih my opinion, the very scanty ih formation at our disposal permits no more than a conjectural interpretation of what the Greek philosophers from Thales to Socrates really taught. And it is only fit that the beginner should be told as much on his first introduction to the subject. The great thing is that he should become interested enough in these uncertainties to think that the time spent on them has not been thrown away. A. W. B. Excerpt from A Short History of Greek Philosophy The main purpose which I have had in View in writing this book has been to present an account of Greek philosophy which, within strict limits of brevity, shall be at once authentic and interesting - autfientz°c, as being based on the original works themselves, and not on any secondary sources; interesting, as presenting to the ordinary English reader, in language freed as far as possible from technicality and abstruseness, the great thoughts of the greatest men of antiquity on questions of permanent significance and value. There has been no attempt to shirk the really philosophic problems which these men tried in their day to solve; but I have endeavoured to show, by a sympathetic treat ment of them, that these problems were no mere wars of words, but that in fact the philosophers of twenty-four centuries ago were dealing with exactly. Excerpt from A History of Greek Philosophy From the Earliest Period to the Time of Socrates, Vol. 1: With a General Introduction That this part, containing the General Introduction to the entire subject and the his tory of the earliest philosophers, should appear after others dealing with the later periods, is in some mea sure to be regretted, because Greek Philosophy is best treated as a whole, and gains immensely by being studied in the order of development; yet those who are acquainted with the previously translated portions of Dr. Zeller's work will be the more ready to welcome the introductory volume, without which, indeed, many things in the later philosophy, and in Dr. Zeller's treat ment of it, would have remained comparatively obscure. Excerpt from Greek Philosophy: Thales to Plato It is unfortunate in some respects that I have been obliged to deal with certain parts of the subject in a form which does not admit of detailed argument and still less of controversy. The second edition of my Early Greek Philosophy (referred to as E. Gr. Ph.2) makes this in large measure unnecessary in Book I but there are certain parts of Book III. Where I have had to state my conclusions baldly in the hope that I may have a later opportunity of discussing their grounds. My chief aim for the present has been to assist students who wish to acquire a firsthand knowledge of what Plato actually says in the dialogues of his maturity. So long as they are content to know something of the Republic and the earlier dialogues, Platonism must be a sealed book to them.
