Loy Milam worked for several years as an outdoor editor in southern Kentucky and has also contributed a number of outdoor articles and photographs to many outdoor magazines throughout his career as a journalist. Southern Kentucky and northern Tennessee has a number of trophy fisheries, including Dale Hollow Lake which straddles the Kentucky-Tennessee state line and is home of the world record smallmouth bass; the Cumberland River which is a trophy trout fishery maintained by the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife and has also produced numbers of trophy walleye, sauger, and monster stripers over the years; Barren River Lake, which has an excellent population of bass and crappie; Cordell Hull, which produces a number of different species, including largemouth bass, walleye, sauger, and stripers; and Lake Cumberland, which is another excellent smallmouth and striper lake. In his career as a journalist, Milam has been fortunate to fish all of these waters with very knowledgeable anglers and has shared their knowledge through his newspaper, magazine, and online articles. He has written literally hundreds of articles on fishing southern Kentucky and northern Tennessee and has also served as a fishing guide on many of these same waters. In this book he shares what he has learned over the years from these expert anglers. Obviously the information in this book will aid the reader if he or she has the opportunity to make a fishing trip to southern Kentucky or northern Tennessee, but it will also allow him or her to become a better angler on their own home waters. Many of the techniques discussed in this book will easily translate into success on fishing locations throughout the country.

The Kentucky Encyclopedia's 2,000-plus entries are the work of more than five hundred writers. Their subjects reflect all areas of the commonwealth and span the time from prehistoric settlement to today's headlines, recording Kentuckians' achievements in art, architecture, business, education, politics, religion, science, and sports. Biographical sketches portray all of Kentucky's governors and U.S. senators, as well as note congressmen and state and local politicians. Kentucky's impact on the national scene is registered in the lives of such figures as Carry Nation, Henry Clay, Louis Brandeis, and Alben Barkley. The commonwealth's high range from writers Harriette Arnow and Jesse Stuart, reformers Laura Clay and Mary Breckinridge, and civil rights leaders Whitney Young, Jr., and Georgia Powers, to sports figures Muhammad Ali and Adolph Rupp and entertainers Loretta Lynn, Merle Travis, and the Everly Brothers. Entries describe each county and county seat and each community with a population above 2,500. Broad overview articles examine such topics as agriculture, segregation, transportation, literature, and folklife. Frequently misunderstood aspects of Kentucky's history and culture are clarified and popular misconceptions corrected. The facts on such subjects as mint juleps, Fort Knox, Boone's coonskin cap, the Kentucky hot brown, and Morgan's Raiders will settle many an argument. For both the researcher and the more casual reader, this collection of facts and fancies about Kentucky and Kentuckians will be an invaluable resource.
