But to be-gin at the beginning: There was a horrible jam of carriages crossing the ferry and on the steamship docks, and we were all wedged together like pieces of floating ice. Lucy drove me over, and gave me all the sisterly advice that she had forgotten, as well as repeating that which she had already given me during the last week. I was absent-mindedly answering "yes" to all she said, when my attention was attracted to the most rakishly fascinating face that I have ever seen. The possessor of it was peering out of the window of a Waldorf cab, his head cocked impertinently sideways, and each crossways growing tuft of bristly hair seeming thrust out to telegraph additional messages to the little active, interested brain behind the alert eyes. "Now what sort of a person might you be?" his whole attitude asked me distinctly; and then after a moment he turned with equally interested scrutiny to a steward carrying somebody's luggage, and wondered what that might mean. "Oh, you dear," I said aloud, "I wonder who you are? You are the most attractive yellow dog I have ever seen." "Grace, will you stop gazing at all the animals you see, and listen to what I am telling you?" "I am listening, Lucy! I am to go and amuse myself by being ordered around by Great-Aunt, spend my days with Kate and a Baedeker studying the galleries, be home every night at seven, not forget to wear rubbers when it rains" "I do wish you would take things seriously and not be so silly," sighed Lucy. Excerpt from The Moth a Novel Mrs. Spencer is in the library," the butler told Cunningham, as he was relieved of his hat and cane; and with a familiarity which bespoke intimacy with the house and its inmates the caller immediately turned to the stairway leading to the second floor. He was late in dropping in at the Spencers' for tea, but as this was the direct result of the suggestion made by his hostess over the telephone, it had not occurred to him that he would find her still entertaining friends. The sound of voices interspersed with laughter told him of his mistake even before he stood at the door, looking in on the animated scene. "Miller, Hayden, Reed, Langdon, Clapp - five men and not a woman in sight except our charming hostess," Cunningham counted with finger upraised. "Dare I enter and still further overbalance the situation?" "Come on in," Langdon insisted, before Mrs. Spencer could greet him; "six to one is only a fair division with Lucy on the other side. She is running us for fair today." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. From time immemorial, few narrative genres have had the power to so stir the emotions or captivate the imagination as the true account of a lone adventurer's triumph over the titanic forces of nature. Among the handful of such tales to emerge in the twentieth century, one of the most enduring surely must be Sir Francis Chichester's account of his solitary, nine-month journey around the world in his 53-foot ketch Gipsy Moth IV. The story of how the sixty-five-year-old navigator singlehandedly circumnavigated the globe, the whole way battling hostile seas as well as his boat's numerous design flaws, is a tale of superhuman tenacity and endurance to be read and reread by sailors and armchair adventurers alike. First published in 1967, just months after the completion of Chichester's historic journey, Gipsy Moth Circles the World was an instant international best-seller. It inspired the first solo around-the-world race and remains a timeless testament to the spirit of adventure. Francis Chichester's 1967 singlehanded circumnavigation set a blazing record for speed. He completed the voyage with just one stop and 226 days at sea. It was an amazing performance; that he was sixty-five years old made it the more so. Chichester then sat down to write one of the great narratives of modern voyaging. "A remarkable feat, a moving story of conquest by the unquenchable human spirit, a determined old man's gesture of defiance at the modern world. Such was the voyage; his book is a fine account of it with nothing left out."--Alan Villiers, Saturday Review

Excerpt from The White Moth Within reaching distance of her hand was the back of Elsie Rice. Now and then Elsie stepped back, laughing, from the group around her, and Hilda's white satin slippers were in danger. Then Hilda moved, smiling readily. But Elsie never looked around. On the other side was the back of Janey Hubbell. J aney's back was covered with tight-stretched white organdie, through which there showed creases from underneath: when she moved she brushed Hilda's elbow with a huge white satin bow. A long while ago Hilda had been interested in the bow, shaped like a cabbage and pinched and tweaked into fault less rotundity. J aney's dressmaker mother must have done it. But for five whole minutes Hilda had been gazing into its convolutions without seeing them, because she had nothing else to do. Janey was talking to a boy. Excerpt from The Oriental Peach Moth It 1s believed that the rapid and extensive spread of this insect has been due chiefly to shipments of infested fruit and nursery trees bearing overwintering larvae in cocoons. The dispersal of infested fruit by means of automobiles and railroads undoubtedly has been a more important method of distribution than dispersal by means of infested nursery stock. Spread by normal flight of the insect has been of a local character, and can not account for the long distances which occur between old and newly infested areas. After an infestation gets a start in a given locality the adults may fly from one orchard to another. Some have been recorded as flying one fourth mile or more, but the maxi mum flight is unknown. In scouting for newly infested areas it has been repeatedly noted that new infestations are commonly found on fruit trees, primarily peach, plum, cherry, and quince trees, located in back yards or home orchards ln small and large towns. This fact strongly suggests that the source of the new infestations has been wormy fruit discarded by the housewife and merchant.
