This is a book about werewolves and other shapeshifters written from the perspective of a gay, Pagan male. This first book in an anticipated trilogy of gay werewolf books starts with an overview of werewolf lore and then traces the histories, folklore, and mythologies of werewolves and shapeshifters through a number of cultures. Wherever possible links between werewolves and homosexuality are made. Themes include gender variant deities and heroes with wolf/werewolf associations; homosexual initiations and shapeshifting practices among ancient all-male warrior bands; gender-shifting shapeshifters; shamans who changed both shape and gender; animal-human hybrids; and related gay and bi positive myths. While most of the book focuses on male werewolves, information related to lesbians and transgender folks are scattered throughout the book. Additional chapters are devoted to she-wolves, gender-shifting, human-animal hybrids, werebears and bear worship, other were-creatures, and even Christian werewolves.

“The Dread of Difference is a classic. Few film studies texts have been so widely read and so influential. It’s rarely on the shelf at my university library, so continuously does it circulate. Now this new edition expands the already comprehensive coverage of gender in the horror film with new essays on recent developments such as the Hostel series and torture porn. Informative and enlightening, this updated classic is an essential reference for fans and students of horror movies.”—Stephen Prince, editor of The Horror Film and author of Digital Visual Effects in Cinema: The Seduction of Reality “An impressive array of distinguished scholars . . . gazes deeply into the darkness and then forms a Dionysian chorus reaffirming that sexuality and the monstrous are indeed mated in many horror films.”—Choice “An extremely useful introduction to recent thinking about gender issues within this genre.”—Film Theory

Grindhouse filmmaker Andy Milligan has been the subject of a revealing biography, and boasts a grassroots fan base, but his remarkable work has thus far received no serious critical overview. Working virtually alone, on infinitesimal budgets, often using a used 16mm newsreel camera, Milligan crafted some of the most unique melodramas of the 1960s and 1970s. Often mounted as period pieces, using costumes sewn by the filmmaker, Milligan's gritty, bizarre films come across as inimitable meldings of the avant-garde theater of Jean Genet, the experimental films of Jack Smith, and the random cinema verite of a lunatic with a home movie camera. Yet Milligan's films are anything but random, ruminating at length on profound sociocultural themes of the day, including the emptiness of the sexual revolution. Evident throughout all the films are two pet themes: a rabid deconstruction of the heterosexual paradigm, and a grotesque illumination of the family as breeder of dysfunction.
