Carrie Vaughn's The Ghosts of Sherwood revisits the Robin Hood legend with a story of the famed archer's children. Everything about Father is stories. Robin of Locksley and his one true love, Marian, are married. It has been close on two decades since they beat the Sheriff of Nottingham with the help of a diverse band of talented friends. King John is now on the throne, and Robin has sworn fealty in order to further protect not just his family, but those of the lords and barons who look up to him – and, by extension, the villagers they protect. There is a truce. An uneasy one, to be sure, but a truce, nonetheless. But when the Locksley children are stolen away by persons unknown, Robin and Marian are going to need the help of everyone they’ve ever known, perhaps even the ghosts that are said to reside deep within Sherwood. And the Locksley children, despite appearances to the contrary, are not without tricks of their own... King Richard is dead. With King John on the throne, the Sheriff of Nottingham knows he will soon be replaced by one of the new king's favorite men. The only way he can survive the constant vagaries of political whim is to become wealthy in his own right. And the easiest way to do this is to see the king's taxes fall into his own pocket. When the thefts are reported, he will simply claim that a band of bandits has taken up residence in Sherwood Forest and has stolen the money. A good idea and it works. That is until King John decides the sheriff needs some help in hunting down the bandits. Sir Guy is dispatched to Nottingham with a unit of French soldiers under his command. A ruthless man, Sir Guy will not stop until the taxes are returned and the thieves hanged. The sheriff is in trouble. There are no bandits in the wood and the king's coin sits snugly in the lockbox in the sheriff's office. A single word spoken by the wrong person will put his head in a noose. But then news of Sir Robert of Locksley reaches Nottingham. Sir Robert had left for crusade many years before and he and Sir Guy hated each other. When rumors said that Sir Robert was returning to Nottingham, the sheriff devised a new scheme. He would spread word that Sir Robert was the leader of the bandits and that his loyalty to King Richard did not extend to King John. This plan would keep Sir Guy searching the woods for men who don't exist.

This volume explores the reception of the classical past in the works of twentieth-century American dramatist Robert E. Sherwood and his use of the ancient world to critique key events and trends in American history. It explores his comedies and the influence of both Greek Old and New Comedy, as well as his mediation of his experiences in World War I through Livy’s account of the war with Carthage. During the 1930s, Sherwood used the Peloponnesian War as a template for bringing to the attention of an unaware public the danger of an impending war between the forces of democracy and the totalitarianism represented by Nazi Germany, and post-war he raised awareness of the dangers of nuclear war through the lens of the Greek gods. As well as looking at his use of the classical past in his work, since Sherwood wrote drama deeply concerned with the major social and political events of his day, his plays open windows onto the major social and political challenges facing the United States and the world from the outbreak of World War I until the beginning of the nuclear age. This volume will be of interest to anyone working on the Classical Tradition and Classical Reception, as well as to students of twentieth-century American literature, drama, history, and politics.

On investigation the ranches rushes back to the ranch house and his wife, he explains it is no aircraft he has ever seen and no one is on board, the year is nineteen forty seven and with no phone they must wait till morning to drive in town and alert the sheriff. The Sherwood Boys are now teenagers and on their school summer break when they are contacted by their Aunt (Ada Stewart), who after many years working for NASA has now been elected to Congress, to holiday in the USA. However, strange things have been happening in the Congress building with new sightings of Ghosts reported by staff. As David and Andrew travel across the Atlantic their Aunt sends them a news clip of recent Ghost sightings, the boys laugh at the news attachment and settle down in the flight to enjoy the entertainment console, never suspecting the adventure that awaits them. Their adventure begins whilst sight-seeing in congress when they spot their next door neighbour, nothing unusual in bumping into people you know; only trouble is he died some weeks before. Along with their aunt and her assistant, the boys become aware something strange is happening, which get stranger after contacting their mum back home. A big issue is brewing in congress where Aunt Ada has been supporting collaboration in space with the Chinese, but a sinister group has formed in congress and has other ideas. As the big ban is passed in Congress disaster befalls the Chinese space station and it plummets to earth, but just whom or what has brought it down? What strange and secret payload did the Chinese have on board their space station before it was unexpectedly and out of control pulled back to earth? Before anyone can salvage the remains of the crashed space station and scrutinise the wreckage, the Chinese take the decision to destroy the station and its secret pay load high above the earth before it reaches ground. Just before this happens a final retrieved message from the space station reveals just what and who made their space station plummet to earth. After the destruction of the space station an old student friend of Aunt Ada arrives in her New Mexico constituency seeking her help in tracking down the mysterious space station saboteur before others do. The boys also a video revelation to show their Aunt Ada and her student friend throwing light onto the membership of the sinister group that has been tracking their every move. A chase across the New Mexico desert takes place during the balloon festival, where the boys find themselves trapped on board a runaway balloon that looks like it will plunge them into a deep black water filled crater, the Devils Inkwell. Do the boys survive? What did bring down the space station? What was on board the station that needed to be destroyed rather than chance anything being salvaged? Why Ghost sightings around their Aunts congress office? And just what was discovered in the New Mexico desert and is now on board the hot air balloon the boys find themselves trapped on? All these and many more twists and turns in this latest amazing adventure involving the Sherwood Boys are answered in 'Ghosts'
