“My vocation was supposed to be joy, and I was speaking at funerals.” Shortly after being hired by Yale University to study joy, Angela Gorrell got word that a close family member had died by suicide. Less than a month later, she lost her father to a fatal opioid addiction and her nephew, only twenty-two years old, to sudden cardiac arrest. The theoretical joy she was researching at Yale suddenly felt shallow and distant—completely unattainable in the fog of grief she now found herself in. But joy was closer at hand than it seemed. As she began volunteering at a women’s maximum-security prison, she met people who suffered extensively yet still showed a tremendous capacity for joy. Talking with these women, many of whom had struggled with addiction and suicidal thoughts themselves, she realized: “Joy doesn’t obliterate grief. . . . Instead, joy has a mysterious capacity to be felt alongside sorrow and even—sometimes most especially—in the midst of suffering.” This is the story of Angela’s discovery of an authentic, grounded Christian joy. But even more, it is an invitation for others to seize upon this more resilient joy as a counteragent to the twenty-first-century epidemics of despair, addiction, and suicide—a call to action for communities that yearn to find joy and are willing to “walk together through the shadows” to find it.

This moving story shows how a family found joy after their hopes and dreams were shattered by the rare, fatal neurological illness of their two sons. Told by the family's father, a popular Catholic radio host and marriage counselor, it recounts the way he and his wife received the courage and the support they needed to give their children abundant, fulfilling lives in spite of their gradual decline. What initially seemed to be a tragedy for Joe Sikorra's family became a story of human triumph, an outcome made possible by the compassion and mercy of God. Their example can help those facing unexpected losses and challenges to believe that by placing their trust in Providence they too can overcome hardships with the most powerful force on earth—God's love.

"My vocation was supposed to be joy, and I was speaking at funerals." Less than a year after joining the Theology of Joy and the Good Life project at the Yale Center for Faith and Culture, Angela Gorrell got word that a close family member had died by suicide. Less than a month later, she lost her father to a fatal opioid addiction and her nephew, only twenty-two years old, to sudden cardiac arrest. The theoretical joy she was researching at Yale suddenly felt shallow and distant--completely unattainable in the fog of grief she now found herself in. But joy was closer at hand than it seemed. As she began leading Bible studies at a women's maximum-security prison, she met people who suffered extensively yet still showed a tremendous capacity for joy. Talking with these women, many of whom had struggled with addiction and suicidal thoughts themselves, she realized: "Joy doesn't obliterate grief. . . . Instead, joy has a mysterious capacity to be felt alongside of sorrow and even--sometimes most especially--in the midst of suffering." In The Gravity of Joy, Gorrell uses her search for authentic, grounded Christian joy to reflect on the larger societal need for joy as a counteragent to the despair all too prevalent in the twenty-first century. Inviting action in response to the tragedies of addiction and suicide, she articulates a vision for communities that yearn for joy and "walk together through the shadows" to find it.

Victor Weisskopf writes here with his familiar rough eloquence and characteristic passion about the events and major themes which have marked his rich and diversely productive life. He writes, of course, about his Viennese youth and physicists of the first rank with whom he has interacted. But also, recurrently, about the musical dimension of his life (he very nearly became a conductor, and remains an enthusiastic pianist, chamber musician and opera buff). And about his efforts (a career in themselves) to contribute to global peace. Weisskopf has pursued with joie de vivre a life which for all its variety has made integrated good sense. He writes perceptively and well, and has produced a book which is an inspiring delight from beginning to end. (NW) Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

The Black Hole Drive novella deals with the rescue of a mining colony from pressing volcanic activity and getting these people to a new home while their old one cools off . Captain Hardesty and his first officer, Commander Bowman must shelve their relationship long enough to save these hard working people, and their supply of explosive anti -matter, that they use for digging out precious ores. This material is intensely coveted by Earths corporate front and is only given by the ghosts, a trans-dimensional life form, that only will supply this substance to small, independent groups. The Oracle novella deals with the test of a new mental illness drug which is in reality an ESP drug being put forward by doctors within the covert intelligence community. Young James McGregor has to steal enough of the drug and get it to the underground and into production so the folks at CIA and the dummy front called Bryce Pharmaceuticals dont take over the world and turn it into.
