Excerpt from The Greek Philosophers, Vol. 1 of 2 A considerable portion of the present work, comprising the whole of the first volume and the first two chapters of the second, is reprinted with corrections and additions from the Westminster Review. The last chapter of the second volume has already appeared under a slightly different title in Mind for January and April 1882. The chapters entitled, 'The Sceptics and Eclectics,' 'The Religious Revival,' and 'The Spiritualism of Plotinus,' arc now published for the first time. The subject of Greek philosophy is so vast that, in England at least, it has become customary to deal with it in detached portions rather than as a connected whole. This method has its advantages, but it has also its drawbacks. The critic who singles out some one thinker for special study is apt to exaggerate the importance of his hero and to credit him with the origination of principles which were really borrowed from his predecessors. Moreover, the appearance of a new idea can only be made intelligible by tracing the previous tendencies which it either continues, combines, or contradicts. In a word, the history of philosophy has itself a philosophy which requires that we should go beyond particular phenomena and view them as variously related parts of a single system. Excerpt from A History of Greek Philosophy From the Earliest Period to the Time of Socrates, Vol. 1: With a General Introduction That this part, containing the General Introduction to the entire subject and the his tory of the earliest philosophers, should appear after others dealing with the later periods, is in some mea sure to be regretted, because Greek Philosophy is best treated as a whole, and gains immensely by being studied in the order of development; yet those who are acquainted with the previously translated portions of Dr. Zeller's work will be the more ready to welcome the introductory volume, without which, indeed, many things in the later philosophy, and in Dr. Zeller's treat ment of it, would have remained comparatively obscure. Excerpt from Early Greek Philosophy References to authorities, except of the most general kind, are precluded by the plan of the Series to which this Primer belongs. It is, there fore, as well for me to mention that I have gone to the original sources for my materials. The admirable work of Hermann Diels, Fragmente oler Vorsokratiker, Bd. I., Berlin, 1906, has been most helpful for the prae-sophistic philosophers. As regards the interpretation of early Greek philosophy I have found no reason to depart from the views given in my Philosophy of Greece At the same time I wish it to be under stood that, ih my opinion, the very scanty ih formation at our disposal permits no more than a conjectural interpretation of what the Greek philosophers from Thales to Socrates really taught. And it is only fit that the beginner should be told as much on his first introduction to the subject. The great thing is that he should become interested enough in these uncertainties to think that the time spent on them has not been thrown away. A. W. B.
