Excerpt from The Hereford Earthquake of December 17, 1896 The most important seismic district in these islands is the well-known village of Comrie in Perthshire, Situated close to the great fault which forms the southern boundary of the Scottish Highlands. The northern boundary of the same region is another prominent fault, at different points of which, but especially in the neighbourhoods of Ben Nevis and Inverness, earthquakes are far from uncommon. Within the last forty years, rather severe shocks have also originated in Pembroke shire and Essex, in or near the west of Yorkshire, and in the district with which this work is more immediately connected, the south-east of Herefordshire. Of all these districts, the last is the most favourable from a seismological point of view. It is not interrupted by great arms of the sea in the very places where it is most important to have a large number of detailed observations. The counties of Brecon and Radnor, lying immediately to the west, are indeed mountainous and rather thinly peopled, but, with these exceptions, the central area is one over which villages and country houses are closely and uniformly distributed, it is crossed in all directions by a network of railway lines, and at no great distance from the origin are several large towns containing numerous capable and intelligent observers.
