The records of Wakefield sessions contain the following: "Forasmuch as Jane, the wife of William Farrett, of Selby, shoemaker, stands indicted at this sessions for a common scold, to the great annoyance and disturbance of her neighbours and breach of His Majesty's peace; It is therefore ordered that the said Jane Farrett for the said offence, be openly ducked, and ducked three times over head and ears by the constables of Selby aforesaid, for which this shall be their warrant." 1680. Sir Miles Stapylton, of Carlton, was charged by the informer Bolson with being concerned in the plot of sir Thomas Gascoigne, for killing the king and establishing the Roman Catholic religion. In June, 1680, he was sent down from London to be tried at York. The trial was postponed till the following year. Sir Miles defended himself energetically, and brought many persons to throw discredit upon the evidence of the informers, and the jury immediately acquitted him. He was mainly indebted for his escape to the evidence in his behalf of his friends and neighbours, sir Thomas Yarburgh and his lady. 1690. The spiritualism of the seventeenth century took a more practical form than its counterpart of the present day. One of the strangest stories of apparitions is the following, which resulted in the trial, conviction, and execution of William Barwick at the Yorkshire Assizes, before sir John Powel, kt., on 16th September, 1690, for the murder of his wife, near Cawood, upon the 14th of April in that year.
