Excerpt from The Holy Communion: Its Philosophy, Theology and Practice It is with exceeding diffidence that I present this book to the public. The number and importance of the subjects which it embraces would naturally have called for far more leisure than falls to the lot of a London priest. On the other hand, it is impossible for one who has, at any time of his life, formed habits of thought and study, and who has the deep and strong convictions, produced by the blessed possession of the faith, not to feel the most earnest wish to help others in intellectual struggles, which he has once himself gone through. Under the influence of such feelings, a man writes because he can hardly help writing, his book becomes a part of his work for souls. Nor does he stop to calculate its exact value; it is enough for him to have something to say on subjects which are his very life, and that he hopes that, with all its faults, it may be of service to some. In order to prevent mistakes, I wish to repeat what I have said elsewhere, that I am in no way committed by my argument to any of the philosophical views which I describe.
