This study explores perceptions of risk-related factors that may discourage travel to the summer Olympics. Specifically, the research analyzes the degree to which risks related to environmental concerns, instability, and personal limitations impacted travel intentions to the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the 2020 Games in Tokyo, Japan which were held without spectators due to a global pandemic. The purpose of the study was to analyze the degree to which risk-related factors significantly impacted Olympic tourism intentions. Almost identical surveys were administered in the United States (U.S.) and the People's Republic of China approximately two months before the opening ceremony for the 2016 Rio Olympics and again before the originally scheduled 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The role of both sport and tourism in the (re)creation and (re)presentation of national identities is well established, yet relatively little work has critically explored the inter-relationship between sport, tourism and the creation and maintenance of national identities. Despite the advances of globalization, the nation continues to be an important part of both sport and tourism discourse and offers fertile ground for the exploration of identities in postmodern society. The chapters in this collection consider the significance of important sports events and how this is understood in relation to the collective identities of some countries. Authors outline some of the ways in which the nation matters, and consider how and why national identities are important in contemporary sport tourism. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Sport & Tourism.

Cross-cultural management is an important facet of the globalized sport industry. Sport managers must be skilled at working with individuals from diverse cultures and aware of the key issues affecting sport on a global level. This book brings together cutting-edge research from leading sport scholars from around the world, to illuminate some of those important issues and to demonstrate what cross-cultural management looks like in a sporting context. Presenting case studies from countries as diverse as the US, Brazil, Poland and Venezuela, and across a range of sports from football to basketball, the book presents new empirical material derived from a range of inquiry protocols, including both qualitative and quantitative methods. It offers critical analyses of cross-cultural and managerial issues in key areas such as group cohesiveness, group communications, and misperception and misinterpretation. Making an important contribution to our understanding of both theory and practice in sport management, this book is fascinating reading for any student, researcher or practitioner with an interest in global and international sport.
