S2In 1958 a series of birch-regeneration studies was begun on the Bartlett Experimental Forest in New Hampshire. These studies have dealt with the environmental factors that affect birch regenerationchiefly light exposure, soil moisture and soil temperature, and seedbed conditions. In brief, it has been found that germination of birch seeds is best under conditions of high soil moisture and moderate soil temperature. These conditions occur most often on mineral soil seedbeds and in locations shaded from direct sunlight. Height growth, however, is better on organic seedbeds and in direct sunlight (3). To find out how important these and other factors are in actual practice, a survey was made of the amount, distribution, and size of reproduction in several 3-year-old patch cuttings.S3.
