The comprehension of deviant sentences, a not infrequent demand in natural situations, is dependent on several linguistic variables. Grammaticalness, meaningfulness, and familiarity are three variables which are potentially such. In order to study the effect of violating these variables upon responses to deviant sentences, 85 deviant and 15 correct sentences were assigned to eight groups representing all combinations of two values (correct or deviant) on these three variables. The 100 sentences were given to four equal groups of subjects, who rated each sentence from 0 to 10 on the basis of either grammaticalness, meaningfulness, familiarity, or ordinariness. The data of the first three groups were then combined into an 84 by 100 matrix. A principal components analysis was performed on the cross-product matrix with a varimax rotation. Four interpretable factors emerged, accounting for 89% of the variability. (Author).

The present volume is intended to give an overall picture of research in pro gress in the field of generative grammar in various parts of Europe. The term 'generative grammar' must, however, be understood here rather broadly. What seemed to be an easily definable technical term several years ago is becoming more and more vague and imprecise. Research in generative gram mar is carried on according to rather diversified methodological principles and being a generative grammarian is often more a matter of confession than any adherence to the common line of methodology which can be traced back to the conception of grammatical description initiated by Noam Chomsky. The direct or indirect influence of this conception is, however, clearly recog nizable in most of the papers of this volume. The most difficult thing was, naturally enough, to select appropriate papers in the realm of semantics. Apart from the special trend in generative grammar referred to as 'generative semantics' (though here, too, we might ponder on what 'generative' really means) the term 'generative' is hardly employed in semantics. The search for semantic primes, the application of the methods of mathematical logic, the inquiry into the intricate relationships between syntax and semantics and the utilization of syntactic information in semantics are perhaps the most charac teristic traits of contemporary semantics. All of this, of course, is at no variance with the principles of generative grammar, on the contrary, most of it has been made possible through the achievements of generative grammar.

In order to bring some minimal amount of order to the chaos that almost inevitably attends the use of the word ‘existential’ in a linguistic investigation, the author reserved the term existential sentence (ES) to designate all and only those English sentences in which there appears an occurrence of the unstressed, non-deictic, ‘existential’ there. Thus the term will be used as a characterisation of a class of syntactic objects, not as a semantic description. With ES sentences including formations such as ‘There were several people talking’ and ‘There ensued a riot’, perhaps nowhere else do we find so clearly displayed the complexity and subtlety of the syntactic and semantic interactions which determine the nature of human language.
