Between 1889 and 1913 Nicholas II, Grand Duke and Heir to the Throne, later Tsar of Russia, personally catalogued his priceless jewelry in a small notebook as a record of his extensive collection. That he did so with genuine appreciation and Fondness, and with the methodical diligence of an accountant, is evident in his record -- having carefully numbered the more than 300 pieces (some of which were one-of-a-kind creations by Faberge or Cartier), he painted a miniature watercolor of each item. The albums have until now remained hidden for over seventy years in government archives in Moscow. Whilst researching his book Imperial Palaces of Russia in the Autumn of 1990, Prince Michael of Greece was puzzled by an invitation to view material in the government archives. Thirty thick, leather-bound volumes, embossed with the Imperial monogram, awaited him - the private photograph albums, which the curators wanted to show first to a relative of the Romanov family. Through his selection of images from the family albums, the author here tells the story of the last Tsar, one of the saddest of twentieth-century politics. Nicholas II was a man both unprepared and ill equipped to rule the greatest empire in the world, and under the influence of Alexandra, the wife he so adored, he led Russia to disaster. But theirs was also an extraordinary love story, as the three hundred photographs in this book reveal. Away from the responsibilities of Empire, we see a close and loving family of simple tastes and great candour. The photographs clearly illustrate the personalities of Nicholas and Alexandra and of their four daughters - Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia - and beloved son and heir Alexis, who suffered from haemophilia and whose every move was carefully watched. This volume is a reproduction of two photograph albums belonging to the Russian Imperial Family, some of which were taken by Tsar Nicholas II's daughters, as well as by the Tsar himself. The first album, created by the Grand Duchess Maria, contains 40 b&w personal photographs, previously unpublished, of Imperial life. The second, which belonged to the Tsarina Alexandra, has some 30 photographs, unseen until now, of the Romanovs at work with their subjects and relaxing at home and on their estates. An additional 30 rare prints complete this record of a priviliged era that vanished in 1918. These albums are part of the estate of the Romanov historian, James Blair Lovell, passed on to him by Gleb Borkin, the son of the family doctor who was executed with the Imperial Family in 1918. Many of the photographs are accompanied by captions translated from the original Russian. This text gives detail on their social, historical and political background. When James Blair Lovell died in 1994, he left an important archive of Romanov documents and artefacts.
