Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: April 21, 1904 God bless you. May He pour out His Spirit upon His people and help them to be wise and prudent in their words and in their actions. We say to you, keep the laws of God, and you should honor and keep the constitutional laws of men. That is what we say. We say to you, pay your debts and get out of debt. Pay your obligations and free yourselves from the bondage of obligation, if you can, and as soon as you can. We say to you, protect your own faith by Godly lives. We say to you, do unto others as you would have them do unto you - in righteousness. We say to you, keep the faith delivered to the Saints in the latter day. We say to you, honor God in your lives; honor and love Christ, the Son of God, in your hearts; uphold in honor and maintain respect for the name of Joseph Smith, the Prophet of God, who was instrumental in laying the foundation of this great latter-day work. Do not turn away at every wind of doctrine or be swayed by the cunning and craftiness of men, whereby they lie in wait to de ceive. Know the truth for yourselves. Walk in the light as Christ is in the light, and you will have fellowship with Him, and then the blood of Jesus Christ will cleanse you from all sin. God bless you to this end is my humble prayer, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 67: August 24, 1905 To consume all the 'wood, hay and stubble.' And the gold from the dross purify. Sometimes Latter - day Saints who hear and embrace the Gospel in Euro pean countries, and then gather with the body of the Church in America, become dissatisfied and return again to their native lands. This, we are pleased to say, does not occur often among the Saints of Great Britain, but once in a while we hear of such cases, and to such, as well as to all others who contemplate some day gathering to Zion, these words are directed in the spirit of kindness and love. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: November 17, 1904 It was the voice of a little child, and the old man wondered that a child should be alone on that bank where only the wild beasts wandered after nightfall. A third time the voice called. Then Ofi'a arose slowly, for he was stiff in his limbs and there was pain in his body, and he said to himself I know not whether I shall be able to ford the river or no, but for the sake of the Lord Christ, and of the little child, I will try it for the last time. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: January 21, 1904 In the case of such Church officers as are expected to devote their time and talents constantly in its service, and upon whom it depends for the prompt performance of such obligations, it requires that they shall, before entering into secular pursuits that would prevent them from attending to their Church duties, first acquaint their presiding officers with their desires and obtain per mission to carry out their intentions, in order that no confusion or failure in the order and work of the Church may be occasioned thereby. This require ment necessarily extends to the acceptance of political office, but not to the choice of party or the liberty to engage in such political or other activity as would not interfere with the services due to the Church. Every officer as well as member of the Church is entirely free as to political opinion and action, and may resign any position that is in restraint of perfect liberty. The early settlement of Utah by the Latter-day Saints or Mormons was the result of persecution and hostility to their religion. The Church leaders were the Pioneers in this colonization. They directed the movement and the work of founding and building cities and industries, for the formation of a new commonwealth. When the Territory was organized by Congress they were placed in public office as the logical and fitting incumbents. The Presi dent of the Church, the leading pioneer, was appointed Governor by the President and Senate of the United States. Other prominent Church leaders received civil appointments, and the most active Church officials, being en gaged also in promoting secular improvements, were elected to territorial and civil positions. This condition of affairs fostered the notion that Mormon ism united church and state. The unanimity that prevailed in the choice of these public servants while the people of Utah were practically of one faith and party, further favored the impression abroad that they voted as they were required by the Church. But the ecclesiastical and political systems were kept distinct, and their affairs were separately conducted and maintained. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: March 31, 1904 There have been a number of converts made who have joined themselves to adjacent stakes of Zion of which there are eight within the mission borders. Some members who have been slack in their duties have been persuaded to renew their diligence in the work. Many girls, who have drifted away from the Church and have married outside of its pale, have been found and their children have been blessed and baptized. In this way alone the establishment of the mission has done much good. The mission work has been and is still growing and, though few converts are being made, many have become warm friends and defenders of the Mormon Elders. Hospitality is characteristic of the people and the Elders have suffered little or no hardship when left to their mercy. God has abundantly blessed His servants in this mission. Comparatively few are met who give credence to the many stories which are being circulated about the Church. One old gentleman said to the writer the other day, If some of these people who are doing so much talking would go to Utah and see for themselves, as I have done, they would return with the notion that the Mormons are a pretty good people. Referring to the Senator Smoot agitation, he continued, Petitions are no guide to be governed by. I could go out and in a few hours get fifty names to a petition to hang a man. Liberality of thought and expression is everywhere heard. The people are willing to allow all others their own peculiar mode of worship and show no desire to molest them in it. They are content with the religion of their fathers and do not give themselves to worrying about their neighbors. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: November 10, 1904 One of the essentials, the leading essential, is the proper appreciation of the doctrines of the Gospel of J esus Christ. There is that which will bring life, and joy, and happiness forever. You should not esteem it lightly, nor deny its messengers a hearing. They stand ready at your doors to teach it you, freely and without cost. Despise them not, nor spurn their message. Though its adoption may bring you some annoyance, in the final review of your life it will act as a well of living water springing up unto everlasting life. You may think that the Latter-day Saints have not a message worth your while; you have more important things. I tell you that to fail to hear them, to avoid or refuse entertaining them, and to neglect to listen to and obey the message which they bear, is precious opportunity lost, which, one day, in the final, the home review of the experiences of your life, will bring you sorrow and regret. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: April 28, 1904 And what were the peculiar teachings that were set forth by President, Apostle and Elder? The same Gospel teachings that were set forth by Jesus of Nazareth almost nineteen hundred years ago - a call to faith, repentance and baptism, an inspiration to purer thoughts, nobler deeds, a higher existence, a plea to live God-like lives here, that we may dwell with our Father when we are called to pass behind the veil. Men were urged to be honest, to be vir tuous, to be industrious, to be men in very deed, and this for their temporal as well as for their eternal salvation. They were taught to be humble, to be prayerful, to be forgiving; to gain for themselves a testimony as to the Gospel Of Christ and to live up to the light that the Holy Spirit sheds abroad in their hearts. In it all there was not one word Of bitterness, one word Of regret, one word of reproach. The Gospel that is preached in the tabernacle, in Salt Lake, is the same identical Gospel that is preached by the Mormon Elders on the street corners of our cities and in the cottages of the country, for the Gospel does not change with time or tide, with geographical clime or social condition. It is the same yesterday, to-day and forever. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: February 4, 1904 In the spring of 1896, mission headquarters were moved to Kansas City, and arrangements made for having the printing done by a Kansas City firm. In this year Elder Samuel G. Spencer assumed control of mission affairs. Under his vigorous direction the work made rapid strides and many improvements in method were inaugurated, among which might be mentioned the opening of work and the organizing of a branch in Chicago by Elder Christian J. Fjelsted and others, the sending of Elders to. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: December 15, 1904 Joseph Smith taught, and the Book of Mormon teaches, that innocent children, who die before arriving at the age of accountability, are redeemed by the blood of the Savior. This doctrine was also set down as a heresy, and ministers said that thousands of children were in hell, as a result of some body's failure to secure for them the baptismal ordinance. This doctrine, denounced in the Book of Mormon as an abomination in the sight of God, was strenuously taught by one faction of Christians for more than two hundred and fifty years. Now comes the great National Convention of Presbyterians, held in Los Angeles in 1903, and officially discards the doctrine of infant damnation as being untrue, unscriptural, unmerciful, inconsistent and unjust. We are glad to see them make a little closer approximation to the truth. Had they listened to and heeded the voice of an inspired prophet, they might have dispensed with this false and cruel dogma three-quarters of a century ago.
