Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: May 3, 1906 Parents are thus made responsible, as they certainly should be, for the proper training of their children. As soon as they manifest the capacity to obtain knowledge, instruction that will lead them eternal life should be given. The introduction to the process of becoming saved is plain and simple: faith in God and His Son Jesus Christ, repentance of sins, etc. Had Joseph Smith neglected to provide ample means for the education of children, his system would have been very incomplete. Had he placed more emphasis on the study of history, language, geography, etc., than on the ele mentary conditions of obtaining divine knowledge, he would have simply followed well established precedents. Having, however, established a proper foundation, he goes on to explain that his students must be conducted into all the fields of knowledge. They are not to be so captivated with the beauty and dignity of the spiritual idea as to become impracticable. On the other hand, his system provides that the justification of the practical is found in its inestimable contributions to the ideal. His students are not to be seduced by the wealth and Splendor of the means of life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: May 24, 1906 In the day thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Now it is a scriptural fact that Adam did not die in twenty-four hours after partaking of the fruit. We find that he lived to be nearly a thousand years old. We may gather from this that a day with the Lord may be a great period of time with us. As the forces have acted on the earth during these periods, they have tended to make the earth a better dwelling place for mankind. As man has progressed, so the earth has progressed to meet his demands. Through the countless years, rivers have been formed which make commerce easier for man. The eruptions which have taken place, and the action of water in wear ing the crust of the earth down have made it possible for man to gain access to the minerals which are so needful to him; and thus we can see how the earth is bettering itself for the abode of man. Every atom of matter must fill the measure of its creation. Man expects through the Gospel plan to become perfect even as God is perfect. Man came here upon the earth to gain a schooling that was necessary to advance him up the scale of progression. This earth was made for this express purpose, and since it has been progress ing with man thus far, why will it not progress further? Man looks forward to being resurrected and becoming an immortal being. Paul said, If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. This is true. Man's thoughts go beyond the grave, possibly to some imaginary heaven on some other planet. If this earth was made for man, why not this earth be the planet? I do not mean in the con dition it is now, but in a condition that would be fit for exaltation. If man is resurrected, why may not the earth also be regenerated and become the abode of immortals? Why should we think to live on another planet when this earth has nourished us while going through our schooling? The Savior, in speaking to the apostles of future glory said, I say unto you, ye which have followed me in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. The word regeneration means to change, or a new birth. Peter also voices this same thought. When speaking to the people at Solomon's temple, he said, Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the time of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; and he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you; whom the heaven must receive until the time of the resti tution of all things. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: March 15, 1906 Let me say to our young men who are here studying different branches of learning: Hunt up your friends; associate with your brethren and sisters. DO not pull away from them; do not keep yourselves aloof from them. GO to their meetings. Go to the presiding authorities and talk with them. Say to them, Here I am. If you can use me for any good, do so. If I have talent and ability to do anything you want me to do to roll on the work of the Lord and to convince the honest in heart of the truth we have received, here I am, ready to be used for the accomplishment of God's purposes whenever it is possible for me to get away from my studies. Now, boys, do this. Remem ber the Old saying, that it is not all of life to live; nor is it all of death to die. There is something more in life than the mere living - eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die. Men will be held accountable before the great Judge Of the quick and the dead for the deeds done in the flesh. You cannot avoid that. You are not here by chance. You came here by the will of God, according to His design, to fulfil His purposes; and you came here without Seeking it yourself, so far as this world is concerned. You are entities; you have living souls within you; and you will be raised' from the dead just as sure as Jesus Christ was raised from the dead. As sure as by Adam you die. Excerpt from The Latter Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: March 1, 1906 Dear Brother - Your letter asking us to come to Athens has been received in Aintab, and I am just informed of the same. Myself and wife are now on our way to visit some Saints in the north, about two hundred and fifty miles from here, and we shall be gone several months. We hope to visit you as soon as possible. Perhaps in the fall or winter, as soon as we can get there. We shall pray for you and your companions, that the Lord will bless you all with increasing faith and light, and we trust you will live righteous lives so that all needful blessings may come to you. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: January 18, 1906 IT is remarkable how the Lord raises up friends to His servants while they are engaged in the ministry. In whatever part of the world they may labor, the Latter-day Saint missionaries meet with those who befriend them in a most unexpected manner. People that become thus friendly are sometimes those who are earnestly seeking the truth and are interested in the Gospel message, at other times they do not accept the Gospel, but continue to remain friendly with the Elders, and go to considerable trouble and expense, and at times even risk their lives, to assist and defend them. To do this it often requires not only considerable physical courage but moral courage as well, owing to the unpopularity of the Mormon missionaries and their doctrines. The only way to account for the friendship shown by such persons is to ac knowledge that the Lord has wrought upon their hearts to assist His servants who are dependent upon Him for support. Upon one occasion when the Prophet Joseph Smith was arrested upon a trumped up charge, a lawyer was influenced to defend him in court through hearing a mysterious, audible voice commanding him to do so. The writer remembers meeting a gentleman in England who had made it a practice of defending the doctrines taught by the Latter-day Saints, and of assisting the Elders whenever he met them. He carried a well-worn Ready Reference with him, and was well posted on our doctrines. His business took him to various parts of the country, and in his travels he would occasion ally meet our missionaries, attend the services, and sometimes hire meeting halls for them. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 68: December 6, 1906 I desire that the star, which has sent forth its brilliant rays for so many years, will continue to shine with its customary lustre, and that it will receive the support of the Saints at home and abroad. I solicit articles from the Elders, and with the efficient editorial aid at hand I hope to keep this luminary all that it should be as a Gospel standard and a source of joy, light and comfort to the people of Get]. Expecting to visit and aid the different conferences and missions and pray ing that the way may be opened for the extension of the work in other parts of the world, I enter upon my labors on the eastern hemisphere with joy and gratitude to the Giver of all good. Peace be unto all the Saints, and may the light of the Lord dispel the darkness that is upon the nations, heralding the great Millennial Day which is now dawning upon the world.
