Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 88: December 2, 1926 It appears to me to indicate that a time has come when the proper relationship, which should exist between Church and State, between civil and ecclesiastical law, between those who ad minister civil government and those who stand as representatives of the church or the various religious denominations of the world, must be determined. That there is a proper relationship is clearly defined in the word of the Lord, and in the teachings of the Redeemer Himself. Give to Caesar that which belongs to him; render obedience to the civil law. Give to God that which belongs to Him, and render allegiance and service to Him. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: August 11, 1910 One of old, I think it was Pilate, asked the Lord, What is truth? Christ did not immediately answer the question, but He answered it at another time, and this was the answer that He gave to the question: Saith the Lord, my word is truth. If God has spoken, He has spoken the truth. If He has sent His servants who teach His word, then His servants teach the truth, and the Lord Almighty is bound to sustain His word, which is truth, and also to sustain every individual soul who has established his hopes upon the word of the Lord. Now permit me to say just a few words more with reference to this. What is truth? God is truth, and Christ is truth, and the plan of life and salvation instituted by the Father in the beginning is truth, and this truth permeates every doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Now, the question arises in the hearts of many people, Is the mission of Joseph Smith true? We come to the world to declare to you that his mission is divine, and from my point of View, and the point of view taken by every faithful elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, if the mission of the Prophet Joseph Smith be not divine, then the mission and the doctrine of the Lord Jesus Christ will fall in the same way. This is our testimony to the children of men, and this testimony bears to you, our friends, a message of peace and reconciliation to God. We believe in every doctrine taught by the Son of God, and our belief in these principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ are not of any avail to us except we do more than simply believe in them, What will it avail a man to believe that repentance of sin is a true doctrine, if he does not repent of his sins What will it avail for you or me to believe in Christ the Son of God, and yet neglect to obey and keep His commandments? Let us put our belief and our faith into works, and then we will please God. The Savior said, Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. (matt. 8: 24 Now my friends, the Lord restored the Priesthood through John the Bap tist to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, which holds the power of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins, and later he was visited by Peter, James and John, and they conferred upon him and upon his associate the Melchizedek Priesthood, which is after the order of the Son of God, thus conferring upon man the authority of God to ofi'iciate in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. N ow, these things are true, or they are not true. And we come to declare to the world that we know they are true. Therefore, whosoever will receive these teachings and this doctrine, and the blessings and privileges of the Holy Priesthood, will eventually become heirs of God, and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: June 4, 1908 Fairchild 'of Oberlin College, Ohio, U. S. A., and on comparison with the Book of Mormon it was found to be totally different in every particular from that work, and it is now kept in the library of that institution, and has been copied and printed and is offered for sale wherever the Book of Mormon is published. All this has been threshed out so often as to have become monotonous to many people, and we apologize to the readers of the star for recurring to the subj ect, but its recent revival gives reason for this reference. As is well known to everybody who has seen the Book of Mormon, it has for a preface the testimony of Three Witnesses that the plates from which it was translated were shown to them by an angel of God, and of eight witnesses that they had seen and handled the plates by natural means, and had inspected the hieroglyphics engraved thereupon. In the leaflets now distributed, and in the puerile attempt of a Liverpool clergyman to attack this testimony, it is stated that the Three Witnesses spoken of left the Mormon Church and denied their former statement. It is for the purpose of showing the utter falsity of this recent fabrication that we take up the matter again. Here is the testimony of the Three Witnesses as it has appeared in every issue of the Book of Mormon from the opening of the year 1830 to the present time: Be it known unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, unto whom this work shall come, that we, through the grace of God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, have seen the plates which contain this record, which is a record of the people of N ephi, and also of the Lamanites, their brethren, and also of the people of Jared, who came from the tower of which hath been spoken; and we also know that they have been translated by the gift and power of God, for His voice hath declared it unto us; wherefore we know of a surety, that the work is true. And we also testify that we have seen the engravings which are upon the plates; and they have been shown unto us by the power of God, and not of man. And we declare with words of soberness, that an angel of God came down from heaven, and he brought and laid before our eyes, that we beheld and saw the plates, and the engravings thereon; and we know that it is by the grace of God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ that we beheld and bear record that these things are true; and it is marvelous in our eyes, nevertheless, the voice of the Lord commanded us that we should bear record of it; wherefore, to be obedient unto the commandments of God, we bear testimony of these things. And we know that if we are faithful in Christ, we shall rid our garments of the blood of all men, and be found Spotless before the judgment seat of Christ and shall dwell with him eternally in the heavens. And the honor be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God. Amen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 70: October 1, 1908 And now we come to the church which the Messiah, in fulfill ment of the prophecies of ancient prophets, has re-established in the earth in the latter days. Its founder, under God, was an ob scure youth, the son of a humble farmer; its members, like the first disciples of Christ, were from the ranks of the common people; its apostles and prophets were chosen, not for their great learning, for they were not learned men, but for their humility; it was organized 'on the 6th day of April, 1830, with six members: its first places of worship were the groves and little log cabins; it has been opposed by every sect in Christendom; the most bitter persecution has been heaped upon its members; they have been driven from pillar to post, their homes destroyed, their property confiscated, and many of them put to death. But notwithstanding all this the little stohe cut out of the mountain without hands has become a mountain; the grain of mustard seed has developed into a great tree; the Church of Jesus Christ 'of Latter-day Saints has become the envy of other churches. To-day it has a membership of about four hundred thousand; its missionaries are in almost all the nations of the earth, preaching the gospel of the kingdom freely; it has hundreds of large, magnificent places of worship; in fact, it has been pronounced the most remarkable religious organ ization of the age. If an advancement is to be made the one to get the promotion is the one that has best performed his duty, and the higher that promotion the more necessary it will be that the recipient must have had many duties to perform, for we can see that it would be folly to advance a mere stoker to the position of an officer in one step. In business we also see that the one promoted is the one that has done his duty, and that those in responsible positions are they who have merited them.
