This introduction to the basic ideas of structural proof theory contains a thorough discussion and comparison of various types of formalization of first-order logic. Examples are given of several areas of application, namely: the metamathematics of pure first-order logic (intuitionistic as well as classical); the theory of logic programming; category theory; modal logic; linear logic; first-order arithmetic and second-order logic. In each case the aim is to illustrate the methods in relatively simple situations and then apply them elsewhere in much more complex settings. There are numerous exercises throughout the text. In general, the only prerequisite is a standard course in first-order logic, making the book ideal for graduate students and beginning researchers in mathematical logic, theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. The functional logic programming paradigm combines the two most important fields of declarative programming, namely functional and logic programming, in an integrated way to allow the concise notation of high-level programs. However, the variety of concepts and conciseness of programs may also impact their efficiency. In this work we employ the powerful optimization technique of partial evaluation to develop a fully automatic program optimizer, the so-called partial evaluator. In particular, we formalize the normalization of programs during compilation, establish a formal notation of the evaluation process, develop a formal partial evaluation scheme and prove its correctness and termination, and implement a working partial evaluator which shows impressive results.

And, directly or indirectly, all or almost all these philosophers have had to 'come to terms with' the teaching and books of Georges Canguilhem.
