It was the desire of the pub-j lishers to submit a proof-sheet of each Diocese to its rapective officials, but except to those in the immediate vicinity, they have been unable to do so and have the work published in season. The returns have, howo' ever, been strictly and carefully followed, and the diwry will be} found as correct as a work of the kind can be made. It is issued much earlier than in former years, yet the publishers desire to place it before the public not later than December 1.
