The first volume in a three-volume set of highly sought-after books that covers the art and sculpture on display at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Originally published in 1876 by writer Edward Strahan, the three-volume "Masterpieces of the Centennial Exhibition" series is the closest that we can experience this remarkable, historic event today. Strahan left no stone unturned and covered nearly every detail of the Fair with words and lavish images that preserve it for audiences now and into the future. This enormous tome of artwork and artistic critique is profusely illustrated with hundreds of meticulous engravings that show the most delicate details in statues, paintings, sculptures, and more, which filled the Fine Art building. An art historian digitally scanned and re-mastered each 19th-century image from a priceless pristine copy of the original print. Masterpieces of the Centennial Exhibition 1876 Volume 1: Fine Art Illustrated Special Edition is presented in the original type font with the author's intended layout. A new, retro-inspired cover design was created exclusively for this handsome reprinting. Strahan's landmark book series is rich with information about the remarkable 1876 World's Fair. Held in Philadelphia just a few years after the end of the Civil War, this massive event celebrated America's 100th anniversary of independence. The world came together in peace to admire art, technology, and science. Historians and art enthusiasts alike will find themselves immersed in contemporary writing, period imagery, and a thorough analysis of the pieces on display. One can almost imagine that they're there, soaking in the sights and sounds of the most fabulous party on Earth in 1876.

During America's Gilded Age (dates), the country was swept by a mania for all things Japanese. It spread from coast to coast, enticed everyone from robber barons to street vendors with its allure, and touched every aspect of life from patent medicines to wallpaper. Americans of the time found in Japanese art every design language: modernism or tradition, abstraction or realism, technical virtuosity or unfettered naturalism, craft or art, romance or functionalism. The art of Japan had a huge influence on American art and design. Title compares juxtapositions of American glass, silver and metal arts, ceramics, textiles, furniture, jewelry, advertising, and packaging with a spectrum of Japanese material ranging from expensive one-of-a-kind art crafts to mass-produced ephemera. Beginning in the Aesthetic movement, this book continues through the Arts & Crafts era and ends in Frank Lloyd Wright's vision, showing the reader how that model became transformed from Japanese to American in design and concept. Hannah Sigur is an art historian, writer, and editor with eight years' residence and study in East and Southeast Asia. She has a master's degree from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and is completing a PhD in the arts of Japan. Her writings include co-authoring A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design (Timber Press, 2002), which is listed in "The Best Books of 2002" by The Christian Science Monitor and is now in its second edition; and "The Golden Ideal: Chinese Landscape Themes in Japanese Art," in Lotus Leaves, A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design (2001). She lives in Berkeley.
