Yet it so happens that the men who have been most deeply engaged in this work have been so busy with their work that they seem never to have thought of explaining why or how they did it; and so the Author has been led to try, before it is too late, to weave together, from the fragmentary records of the dead and from the fading recollections of the living, a narrative of modern enterprise which has been honour able to those engaged in it, and has been wide spread and beneficent in its results.
