Excerpt from The Moth a Novel Mrs. Spencer is in the library," the butler told Cunningham, as he was relieved of his hat and cane; and with a familiarity which bespoke intimacy with the house and its inmates the caller immediately turned to the stairway leading to the second floor. He was late in dropping in at the Spencers' for tea, but as this was the direct result of the suggestion made by his hostess over the telephone, it had not occurred to him that he would find her still entertaining friends. The sound of voices interspersed with laughter told him of his mistake even before he stood at the door, looking in on the animated scene. "Miller, Hayden, Reed, Langdon, Clapp - five men and not a woman in sight except our charming hostess," Cunningham counted with finger upraised. "Dare I enter and still further overbalance the situation?" "Come on in," Langdon insisted, before Mrs. Spencer could greet him; "six to one is only a fair division with Lucy on the other side. She is running us for fair today." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Moth Decides: A Novel You might have thought it some mere passing sibilance of wind. But you could not be expected to know Leslie's voice as she knew it. The girl slipped softly out of bed. She did not want to rouse her sister. Hilda was sleeping with her. Hilda had given her own room to Aunt Marjie. When Louise stepped out on to the bare cottage floor, her feet encountered cool little hillocks of sand, the residue of sundry bed-time shoe dumpings. One could not live up here beside Lake Michigan without coming to reckon sand as intimately and legitimately entering into almost every phase of existence. Indeed, she trod on sand more or less all the way across to the single little window; then dropped lightly on to her knees before the window and peered down through the screen. Excerpt from The Brown Moth Lola Kargo came drifting down Sixth Avenue. She was utterly miserable. I And the desolation of this stretch of the avenue while it didn't frighten her, filled her with dismay much as would a vast room which was dark and empty. Great walls on either side dwarfed her, shut her in - great lofty expanses of vacant windows stared down on her. For these were the department stores which ten years before, five years before, huge and bloated, had gloried in their prosperity and reared their bulk arrogantly in the belief that they would for ever constitute New York's shopping centre. But despite their solidity the restless city like a wave rushing on had left their standing here, deserted fortresses of a trade which had vanished. Excerpt from The Desire of the Moth, Vol. 1 of 2 That dozen or so of garrets were a never failing source of interest and delight to Luigia. The miscellaneous lumber that had collected there during years was a mine of untold wealth to the solitary child. It was charming to lift the lid of some box and grope among its contents, bringing to light many a for gotten remnant of brocade and quaintly cut garment; a broken, old-fashioned toy that had belonged to some child years ago; a mildewed photograph album full of faded, dead faces of people who had once perhaps lived in that very house, trodden those very rooms. A fifteen-year-old widow runs across a bridge to catch a train bound for Trichi. Sowmya is running away to make sense of the events that had seized her body and her mind, and had ripped apart her world. She is determined to flee her destiny of numbing isolation within her community, the Brahmins of the Thanjavur district in South India. Her plans pivot when she meets a devadasi--an aging dancer--in her compartment. When the woman Mallika opens her drawstring bag and buys Sowmya her dinner, Sowmya recognizes what she needs to overcome her own condition, that of a young woman in possession of a thin cotton sari, a head shorn clean, and little else. She asks Mallika how she too can achieve that kind of power--the power to open a bag and pull out money. Thus begins Sowmya's transformation in the city by the sea, Madras, which is in the grip of its own political and social changes while India is struggling to seize its independence from the imperial British raj. Here she learns the beauty of dance from Mallika, and the sweetness and agony of falling in love with a married man. The cinema brings unimagined opportunities and all the power and riches that she could desire, but it also consumes her relentlessly. When a letter arrives, Sowmya begins her quest to regain everything that had been lost when she once lived in that small village tucked into a little bend of the Kaveri River.
