Excerpt from Odd Fellows' Literary Casket, 1854, Vol. 1: A Monthly Magazine, Devoted to Odd-Fellowship and General Literature The mysterious power secreted in the ark and holy vessels connected therewith, unattended by any human agency, eventually wrought out for itself its own deliverance. Even the temple of Dagon and its god felt its power, nor could the proud city of Ekron, nor its mighty men, retain the sacred treasure. Like the holy mount on the summit of which, amid lightnings and thunder and darkness, it was divinely planned, and at the base of which it was constructed, none but consecrated hands were allowed to touch it, lest they die. Restored to its proper custodians, Israel again enjoyed peace and prosperity; idols were abolished, groves and images cut down, and days of promise and hope returned to the chosen as the golden sun emerges from the clouds after the storm has passed away. The great Jehovah was again acknowledged by the nation as their king, and all hearts united in pouring forth ascriptions of praise to the majesty on high. Excerpt from Odd-Fellowship Examined, in the Light of Scripture and Reason Lengthy quotations have been given from 'dr. Cooper's book on each of the Objections examined, so that the nature of his argument might be fully understood by the reader, and that justice might, as far as possible, be done to it. To answer all his objections did not enter into the plan of the writer; but the more important ones, it is thought, have been referred to. The aim has been to discuss the principles involved in his state ments, rather than the statements themselves, as the most ready way to dispose of a large amount of irrelevant matter. His book can be obtained at almost any of the bookstores, by any who may desire to follow him at greater length. Excerpt from History of American Odd Fellowship: The First Decade Cicero was never more fortunate than when, with peculiar felicity of diction, he wrote this beautiful canon of criticism. Its conception and expression would seem to defy any later censor to add to or diminish from its scope and substance, and render it Worthy to appear with the golden sentences engraved upon the memory of the world. The rule indicates deep insight, and is suitable to any age and every historian. As our ability may serve, we shall consult this chart in the work before us, and strive to present it in such lights and with such accessories, as will give the reader a true version of the matter. We shall be at pains also to leave the common track of eulogy, and to deal with impartial measure the praise and blame due to prominent individuals; omitting no incident that may serve to shed light upon the eventful story.
