'I realized it was necessary to demolish everything and start again right from the foundations, if I wanted to establish anything in the sciences that was stable and likely to last.' Ren Descartes Revered as the 'father of modern philosophy', Descartes is one of the most influential philosophers of all time, but his ideas are also highly controversial and have been subjected to intense criticism by present-day philosophers. John Cottingham examines Descartes's remarkable attempt to construct a new basis for scientific understanding, his famous first principle, 'I am thinking, therefore I exist,' and his notorious and often misunderstood account of the relation between mind and body. He also tackles fascinating and lesser-known aspects of Descartes's philosophy, including his views on language, human and animal nature, the role of the emotions in the good life, and the place of God in science and ethics. Extracts are taken from the whole range of Descartes's writings, including the Discourse on the Method, Meditations on First Philosophy, Principles of Philosophy and his last book, the Passions of the Soul, as well as extracts from his philosophical letters.

Excerpt from The Philosophy of Descartes in Extracts From His Writings, Selected and Translated The following translations from the philosophical writiiigs Of Descartes are made with one exception, from the French text of Cousin 3 edition Of the col lected works in eleven volumes. The extracts from the Principles are translated from the Latin text of an Elzevir edition Of the Opera Amst., 1677. NO selections have been made from the mathe matical writings, as not coming within the scope Of the series. For the same reason, as well as for want Of space, the more specifically physical views Of Des cartes are not fully represented. Much, perhaps, will be missed, but, on the other hand, portions of writings which, to the translator's knowledge, have not hither to appeared in English, have been introduced. It is perhaps unnecessary to add that in making his selec tions the translator has derived much aid from the great historians Of philosophy, particularly, Kuno Fischer, Erdmann, and Ueberweg, and from the recent treatise of Liard. In the revision Of certain portions of the work, Professor Veitch's version has been con sulted with advantage. The Meditations, one of the key texts of Western philosophy, is the most widely studied of all Descartes' writings. This authoritative translation by John Cottingham, taken from the much acclaimed three-volume Cambridge edition of the Philosophical Writings of Descartes, is based upon the best available texts and presents Descartes' central metaphysical writings in clear, readable modern English. As well as the complete text of the Meditations, the reader will find a thematic abridgement of the Objections and Replies (which were originally published with the Meditations) containing Descartes' replies to his critics. These extracts, specially selected for the present volume, indicate the main philosophical difficulties which occurred to Descartes' contemporaries and show how Descartes developed and clarified his arguments in response. This edition contains a new comprehensive introduction to Descartes' philosophy by John Cottingham and the classic introductory essay on the Meditations by Bernard Williams.
