Excerpt from The Philosophy of Welsh History This work does not pretend in any sense to be a history of Wales, or to give any consecutive narrative of all the movements that have affected the fortunes of the Principality. It differs in many important respects from a regular history. It was rather to dwell upon the dramatic phases of historical events and upon the religious and sociological phenomena, and to concern itself but slightly with the growth of Welsh institutions as such, that it was written. Not much account has, therefore, been taken of proportion. So much has been said and written of late years respecting the rapid advance of Wales in population, in commerce, in education, in the facilities for education, in political ambition, and in her progress towards selfgovernment, that I have deemed it of interest and of importance, not merely to Welshmen, but to other sections of the United Kingdom, to discuss the problem or problems involved in this development, and to endeavour to furnish an adequate account of the causes which have led up to the changes that have taken place. The question presents grounds for a reconsideration of many of the conclusions formed by Welsh nationalist historians, and of the whole lines of argument hitherto adopted by them. Their deductions are, I contend, without justification. In other words, their synthesis or the traditional formulas by which they have sought to explain the forces that have operated in the evolution of Welsh national life, have been based upon false facts and false inferences. Based on the most recent historical research and current debates about Wales and Welshness, this volume offers the most up-to-date, authoritative and accessible account of the period from Neanderthal times to the opening of the Senedd, the new home of the National Assembly for Wales, in 2006. Within a remarkably brief and stimulating compass, Geraint H. Jenkins explores the emergence of Wales as a nation, its changing identities and values, and the transformations its people experienced and survived throughout the centuries. In the face of seemingly overwhelming odds, the Welsh never reconciled themselves to political, social and cultural subordination, and developed ingenious ways of maintaining a distinctive sense of their otherness. The book ends with the coming of political devolution and the emergence of a greater measure of cultural pluralism. Professor Jenkins's lavishly illustrated volume provides enthralling material for scholars, students, general readers, and travellers to Wales.
