Current Issues in Computer Simulation is a collection of papers dealing with computer simulation languages, statistical aspects of simulation, linkage with optimization and analytical models, as well as theory and application of simulation methodology. Some papers explain the General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS), a programming package incorporating a language to simulate discrete systems; and the SIMSCRIPT, a general-purpose simulation language using English commands, for example, FORTRAN. Another simulation language is the General Activity Simulation Program (GASP), providing for an organizational structure to build models to simulate the dynamic performance of systems on a digital computer. Other papers discuss simulation models of real systems, including corporate simulation models, multistage consumer choice process, determination of maximum occupancy for hospital facilities, and the juvenile court system. Many computer simulations are statistical sampling experiments performed on a model of the system under investigation. Other papers discuss some of the variables involved in the statistical design and analysis of simulation experiments such as variance reduction techniques, generation of random variates, and experimental layout. For example, one application simulates inventory systems when many items are stocked in various locations. The collection is suitable for programmers, computer engineers, businessmen, hospital administrators, schools officials, and depositories of huge volumes of information or data.

An epic spanning more than half a century of Taiwan's history, this breathtaking historical novel traces the fortunes of the Pengs, a family of Hakka Chinese settlers, across three generations from the 1890s, just before Taiwan was ceded to Japan as a result of the Sino-Japanese war, through World War II. Li Qiao brilliantly re-creates the dramatic world of these pioneers -- and the colonization of Taiwan itself -- exploring their relationships with the aboriginal peoples of Taiwan and their struggle to establish their own ethnic and political identities. This carefully researched work of fiction draws upon Li's own experiences and family history, as well as oral and written histories of the era. Originally published in Chinese as a trilogy, this newly translated edition is an abridgement for English-speaking readers and marks the work's first appearance in the English-speaking world. It was well-received in Taiwan as an honest -- and influential -- recreation of Taiwan's history before the relocation of the Republic of China from the mainland to Taiwan. Because Li's saga is so deeply imbued with the unique culture and complex history of Taiwan, an introduction explaining the cultural and historical background of the novel is included to help orient the reader to this amazingly rich cultural context. This informative introduction and the sweeping saga of the novel itself together provide an important view of Taiwan's little known colonial experience.

"A small-state world would not only solve the problems of social brutality and war; it would solve the problems of oppression and tyranny. It would solve all problems arising from power." — Leopold Kohr, Breakdown of Nations This insight was Thomas Naylor's lodestone; it informed and animated everything he did. Primarily an economist -- who taught at Duke University, University of Wisconsin, Middlebury College, and the University of Vermont -- he had also been a businessman, running a small software firm, advising corporations and governments in over thirty countries, an activity that lead him to predict the political upheavals of the Soviet Union. He moved to Vermont in 1990 in search of a human-scale community, which he found, and a decade later founded the Second Vermont Republic, which advocated Vermont secession from the USA to become an independent state, which it had been from 1777 to 1791. Time magazine named the Second Vermont Republic as one of the “Top 10 Aspiring Nations” in the world as recently as 2011. Are you curious about how the twenty-six Swiss cantons support local autonomy and direct democracy in this small nation with four official languages? Did you know that the world is afire with secession movements? What about an organization in which the small nations of the world band together as a counterweight to the unproductive, and often destructive, activities of the "Big Powers" (e.g. Russia in Chechnya, China in Tibet and Xinjiang Province, US in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen and so many other countries)? Thomas Naylor's Paths to Peace addresses these topics and includes a long interview in which Naylor places his ideas and activism in the context of his life. A fond eulogy by Kirkpatrick Sale and a foreword and afterward by Charlie Keil place Naylor's life and work in a larger context.
