The theme is related to “Large Parks on Post-industrial Sites in Contemporary Urban Landscape Conceptions”, which is expounded in the fields of landscape architecture, landscape ecology and urban planning. A worldwide perspective is created so as to conduct cross-cultural research on the theories and practices of large-scale urban parks in North America, Germany and China. Through the scientific approach of ‘critical rationalism’, three design paradigms of large parks in different conceptions of contemporary urban landscapes are formulated based on quantitative and qualitative analysis, which are classified as the organic parks of North American ‘landscape urbanism’, the structural parks of German ‘landscape structuralism’ and the large parks of Chinese ‘urban inventory renewal’. By means of critical thinking in diverse cultural interpretations, the research aims to reveal remarkable similarities and differences between the cultures in the Western world according to their understanding of landscapes (coherent vs. creative), landscape and ecology (representation vs. metaphor), and landscape and life (diversity vs. unpredictability). Through theoretical analysis and case studies, it demonstrates that the international park paradigms characterised by complexity, diversity, sustainability, appropriation and identity can influence various socio-cultural, ecological, and aesthetic developments. Finally, the analytical results of the two park paradigms in Western countries are adopted in the examination of landscape architectural park models and urbanistic theoretical frameworks in China. This monograph is written primarily for scholars, professionals and students in the fields of landscape architecture, urban planning and architecture. The book, involving in-depth analysis about urban parks, green open spaces, green infrastructure and post-industrial landscapes, will have international appeal. Coping with post-industrial brownfields is an issue throughout Europe and North America. A point of departure for their broad rediscovery in Germany was the refurbishment of an abandoned steelworks from 1990 on by Peter Latz which subsequently became Duisburg Nord Landscape Park. This thesis is a socio-historical and spatial study of Griffintown, Montreal. I use Griffintown, a rapidly gentrifying neighbourhood and one of Montreal’s formerly working-class and industrial quarters, as a case study for critiquing the ethics and politics of urban revitalization projects, and affirming the critical and creative role that indeterminacy and interstitial spaces play in the cultural life of post-industrial landscapes. In 2010, I initiated Urban Occupations Urbaines, a curatorial project and invited artists to critically and creatively engage with Griffintown’s spatial history and imminent transformation. Over the course of one year, Urban Occupations Urbaines became a catalyst for assembling diverse forms agency, as well as uncovering less visible and known forms of agency that have occupied and contributed to the culture of Griffintown’s then post-industrial landscape. In this thesis, I situate curatorial practice as a critical methodology for engaging particular communities, artists, and the public in a broader cultural discourse concerning the spatial politics of urban revitalization. I illuminate how site-specific art projects have the capacity to mobilize community activism, modes of participation, spatial interventions, the public role of artists, and engender collaborative forms of knowledge production. I identify what latent agencies are made visible and intelligible through the process of curating site-specific art projects in a post-industrial landscape, and under what urban conditions ideas about community, place, creativity, and public space are being reimagined. An interdisciplinary project, the thesis builds on critical discourses addressing the politics of curating site-specific, collaborative, participatory and socially-engaged art practices in relation to theories of the city, space, place, performance studies, posthumanist thought, and feminist epistemology. The goals of this dissertation are to broaden the discourse of interdisciplinary research, make an original contribution in its methodology and, more specifically, bring together a spatial, cultural and social analysis of urban revitalization politics through politically and socially-engaged site-specific art practices. In this aim, I foreground curatorial practice as a method for this kind of research, the many forms that site-specific art projects take, and show how, as social and spatial practices, they carry their own forms of critical urban discourse and cultural pedagogy.

There has been much written on the new creative economy, but most work focuses on the so-called 'creative class,' with lifestyle preferences that favor trendy new restaurants, mountain biking, and late night clubbing. This 'creative class,' flagship cultural destinations, and other forms of commodity-driven cultural production, now occupy a relatively uncritical place in the revitalization schemes of most cities up and down the urban hierarchy. In contrast, this book focuses on small- to medium-size post-industrial cities in the US, Canada, and Europe that are trying to redress the effects of deindustrialization and economic decline through cultural economic regeneration. It examines how culture-infused economic opportunities are being incorporated into planning in distinct ways, largely under the radar, in many working class communities and considers to what extent places rooted in an industrial past are able to envisage a different economic future for themselves. It questions whether these visions replicate strategies employed in larger cities or put forth plans that better suit the unique histories and challenges of places that remain outside the global limelight. Exploring the intersection between a cultural and sustainable economy raises issues that are central to how urban regeneration is approached and neighborhood needs and assets are understood. Case studies in this book examine spaces and planning processes that hold the possibility of addressing inequality by forging new economic and social relationships and by embarking on more inclusive and collaborative experiments in culture-based economic development. These examples often focus on building upon the assets of existing residents and broadly define creativity and talent. They also acknowledge both the economic and non-monetary value of cultural practices. This book maintains a critical edge, incorporating left critiques of mainstream creative economy theories and practices into empirical case studies that depart from standard cultural economy discourse. Structural barriers and unequal distributions of power make the search for viable urban development alternatives especially difficult for smaller post-industrial cities and risk derailing even creative grassroots initiatives. Structural barriers and unequal distributions of power make the search for viable urban development alternatives especially difficult for smaller post-industrial cities and risk derailing even creative grassroots initiatives. While acknowledging these obstacles, this book moves beyond critique and focuses on how the growing economy surrounding culture, the arts, and ecological design can be harnessed and transformed to best benefit such cities and improve the quality of life for its residents.
