The allotment holders had gathered up this year’s dead, woody plants, which would not rapidly rot down, to burn in a bonfire. Otherwise, plant diseases could infect the next year’s crop. The holders were present in shifts to ensure that the fire did not get out of control and spread. The Pumpkin-Easies also kept a vigil to watch the fire to make sure their home, the Great Pumpkin was not set on fire by falling rockets. Another great fire in London was Grenfell, in June 2017 due to inflammable cladding. The scandal become heightened when it was realised that thousands of other flats had defective cladding. Almost 4 years later, little seems to change as yet another fire breaks out because of the cladding. As the residents said, “Enough is enough.” 10% of the profits of this work will go to Grenfell survivors and another 10% to help around four million leaseholders many of whom still need to have their cladding removed and to find the money to pay for it.

M.J. has snapped thousands of photographs of flowers. On holidays in different parts of Britain with a gardening club, she could spend days finding new plants to enjoy and take their memories home with her photographs. Wisley RHS gardens are a particular joy to her and some of her happiest memories come from pushing grandchildren round its ever-changing flora. On the way home from a cancer operation my husband, Ray, and I stopped off at Hampton Court Palace for a coffee (euphemism for cake and coffee) and then walked in the gardens. After an unpleasant but necessary facial operation the sight of daffodils, bluebells and other plants lifted our spirits and two photos of daffodils are included. While in Lock down she continues snapping the flowers from her garden and she took the opportunity to keep feeling happy by preparing this book which she hopes the flower photos will make others also see the joy in the flowers and feel less confined themselves. Flower Power Photobook was put together during lock down when we could not go out to see this spring’s flowers. I hope you enjoy them.

Linking practical neighborly advice to the many cults of tree worship across the globe, Charles Fenyvesi offers an inspiring overview of planting, pruning, and enjoying trees. He pays homage to the immortalized oak and birch as well the controversial qualities of the paulownia (also known as Princess Tree), named after Czar Paul’s daughter, and the catalpa, planted by Frederick the Great in his Potsdam estate and favored by President Thomas Jefferson. For property owners who cry out for the drama of a solitary, singularly expressive specimen or have room for but one tree, this book lists categories such as elegance or informality, longevity or low maintenance, shape or color, character or foliage. “This book entertains, while teaching each of us how we can better connect with trees, using mind, hands and hearts.” — R. Neil Sampson, Executive Vice President,American Forestry Association “Will make all of us take a new look at the stories and pleasures of trees in our lives and landscapes... presented in a series of vignettes that compel you to read, use and plant trees.” — H. Marc Cathey, National Chair, Florist and Nursery Crops Review, US Department of Agriculture “Columnist Charles Fenyvesi... makes trees seem as familiar as the families who live on the block... He gives very good advice, and along the way he makes the trees memorable as he discusses them with evident pleasure and knowledge.” — Virginia Greiner, garden columnist, Washington Times

Far above a magical land, an enormous pumpkin flies across a bright sky with five-year-old Owen and his three-year-old brother, Oliver, riding on top. The two boys hang on tightly and laugh with pure joy as the beauty and wonders of the land below nurture their innocence and their imaginations. Even so, there is a darkness that threatens to extinguish the light of their childhood. Although they enjoy the home they have created in a cozy and shadowless cave, the boys miss their parents and long for a way back to them. Every night, the pumpkin sits motionless outside the entrance to the cave, keeping the boys safe from harm, but the pumpkin cannot protect Owen and Oliver from all danger. Shadow eyes wait in the darkness, and other creatures even more deadly. When the boys are torn from the pumpkin's safety, they must find strength and courage in their love for each other if they are to survive and find their way back home. This poignant fantasy tale explores the bond of love between two young brothers as they take an enchanted journey through the extraordinary miracle of childhood, through its hardships and fears, its discoveries and triumphs, its vulnerability and its resiliency. With only each other to depend on, the brothers must find their way through the darkness, and back to the light.
