Although Pushkin is best known for his poetry, he switched to writing prose almost exclusively in the years before his death in a duel in 1837. Written in 1834, "The Queen of Spades" shows Pushkin at his story-telling best; in a fairly sparse narrative, Pushkin conveys the deep emotions and drives of his characters. Hermann, a bourgeois ethnic German in the Russian Army, surrounds himself with the opulent Russian aristocracy. He begins the novel wary of gambling, knowing that he does not have the funds to lose at the card table. After hearing of a secret method of winning at Faro, however, he becomes obsessed with the game, willing to do anything to win, with no regard to life and death. The story has become so famous due to the emotional tension and unresolved supernatural elements; Dostoevsky called it "the pinnacle of the art of the fantastic," and Tchaikovsky would later create one of his most famous operas based on it. The story remains a powerful critique of greed and ambition to this day.
