Excerpt from The Re-Shaping of the Far East, Vol. 1 The kind reception accorded by both the English and American Press and public to a first book dealing exhaustively with the Russians in Manchuria, and exposing the true position of the Northern Colossus in the coveted Chinese provinces, has made me suppose that a second work treating the whole Far East in the same intimate manner may likewise do something towards correcting the many erroneous impressions which are fast growing up as one of the immediate results of the war. This second volume is, therefore, in many respects a sequel to the first, and deals mainly with the Northern Far East - that is, the territories lying north of the Yangtsze. The whole story of the past decade in China, Manchuria, Korea, and Japan has been a most curious one, and the manner in which all these countries have become entangled with one another and with rival European nations is probably without parallel in the world's history. Excerpt from The Re-Shaping of the Far East, Vol. 2 Nata - The first eight documents, bearing dates from 1895 to 1899, Show clearly how the pendulum swung up against England in the Far East during this period. The last three documents show the beginning of the reaction but until the value of documents C to G and those agreements which have grown out of them is practically destroyed (documents A and B not being considered as the second cancels the first), there will be scant cause for congratulation. Excerpt from The Truce in the East and Its Aftermath: Being the Sequel to the Re-Shaping of the Far East At the moment of writing, everything tends to confirm the Opinion that only a ten years' truce has set in. It will, accordingly, be one of the greatest constructive victories of diplomacy if, during the nine years of the anglo-japanese Alliance which have still to elapse, a permanent Far Eastern peace is evolved. Such a peace can be secured only by the steady growth of the New China. It is to be hoped, therefore, that attention will continue to be as strongly directed towards the Far East as it was during the war; there are, in truth, great things in the making at the present time, and those who keep their eyes Open will find their own reward.
