Excerpt from The Right Honourable Joseph Chamberlain: The Man and the Statement Two considerations induced me to attempt the difficult task of writing an account of a career as yet unfinished, and of so important and varied a character as that of the Right Honourable Joseph Chamberlain, the present Secretary of State for the Colonies. In the first place, I could find no book dealing with Mr. Chamberlain's life, with the exception of a sketch by Mr. S. H. Jeyes in "Public Men of To-day," written entirely from the political standpoint, and a small pamphlet by Mr. B. C. Skottowe, published about 1885, and now out of print. I hope this book may supply what has been wanting in this direction. Secondly. A just estimate of Mr. Chamberlain's character and work should result from accurate information concerning his career.
